i agree with you about the booklets, but disagree about the rest. i've got both trance europe express 5 and trance atlantic 2, and ta2 is _really_ bad. only the tracks by the single cell orchestra (who are they anyway) and a deephouse track (last track on disk 2, forgot the title) are nice. tex5 has some nice contributions from andrea parker, the advent, dr rockit, marshall jefferson/lumpheads and neil landstrumm. but it's a matter of taste, ofcourse.. name [~] peter cozijn e-mail [~] pu@dds.nl http://huizen.dds.nl/~pu [~] homepage

I still haven't got TEEX5, but I'm going to chime in with my opinion here... TA1 was atrocious, except for the Hardkiss tracks. 2 was somewhat better, specifically because of Dubtribe (and what is up with them lately -- anyone? please? Drukman? Bueller?) and Single Cell Orchestra. SCO is Miguel Fierro from San Francisco. Close friends with Daum Bentley (Freaky Chakra). Has 3 albums out that I can name: _Dead Vent 7_ (Reflective) _Freaky Chakra vs Single Cell Orchestra_ (Astralwerks) _Single Cell Orchestra_ (Asphodel) The last is essential, the others less so. _Dead Vent 7_ is a concept album about a space voyage that goes wrong. Way wrong. Whether or not this is a good album, I leave up to you. I certainly think it's worthwhile. _FC vs SCO_ is just not a patch on their live shows together, which were revelatory for me. Too housy tedious, which, alas, seems to be Daum's direction of late. _SCO_ is fine fine triphop, but then, some of the songs date back to 1992. But they do work in context. Great stuff. Not too hard to find, either. Supposedly Single Cell Orchestra is some sort of clever reference, but I've never been able to place it. I'm sure I'll feel stupid when it's someday explained to me.

The self-titled album is a favorite. I wouldn't really call it trip-hop, though. The beats are mostly down-tempo, but there's very little sampling or lo-fi. It's pretty much all synth with programmed drum parts. Emphasis on that forgotten archaism - MELODY. Beautiful moods and textures. These tracks have appeared on many comps, so if you like any of them - "Transmit Liberation" is a stand-out mood piece - go for this album. I believe CDNow has the entire album in RealAudio format for on-line listening.

I assumed it was an extension of the expression "one-man orchestra". 3

i thought it was a play on 'single cell organism', as in amoeba and such. with maybe a glance at the 70's prog rock group electric light orchestra? ah, who knows. rob

I've got them all, and _dead vent 7_, if you can get over the cheesy voice-over, is a great album, and at least as worthwhile as _Single Cell Orchestra_. Don't bother with Freaky Chakra vs Single Cell Orchestra though (IMHO), it is very repetive beats without the emotion that makes SCO so grand. On Fri, 5 June 1998, at 05:15:59, Andrew Hime wrote:

agreed.

triphop? hmm.. I won't categorize, but that's a weird label.

SCO - transmit liberation appears on highways & landscapes - chill-out classics and ethereal anthems - 2xcd (ca.1997) i rarely find comps worthwhile however H&L is an excellent assortment of downtempo tracks. some of the artists include: gas, sun electric, john beltran, dave angel ... jeffrey Zenon M.
