Funny, Colourbox is the only 4AD I can still enjoy (and I mean the entire CD)! And to think that at the time of it's release, I thought of it as the most disposable music, almost embarrassing that it was on this label which usually had such high standards (I was only 23 at the time...) ivo once said that colourbox was the most subversive band on 4AD. i have to agree. and i still love both their CDs. even the extremely cheesy pop stuff on the s/t album. bonus trainspot: william orbit does the guitar solo on "manic". amazing how "baby i love you so" and "looks like we're shy one horse" are still so incredibly wonderful. heavy heavy dub grooves with 18 billion studio tricks per minute. i have no idea what they're up to now but i did hear that one of them is dead. -- Jon Drukman jsd@gamespot.com ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Plan: Eat right, exercise regularly, die anyway.

Yeah...I noticed that the day I first posted about it. Never looked that closely before, I guess. Odd, because I've always loved the cd. "Say You" is a great melody - even if it is shameless pop. From "Edit the Dragon" onward, I can't break the sequence. "Arena II" still gives me chills. Dated? Yes - especially in the 1st part of the album, but it weathers better that a lot from that era. Given the cut and paste job they did with ETD, it seems like they'd have to be up to something good these days. Too bad.

lots of the samples on "baby i love you so/looks like we're shy one horse" are from Escape From New York. "Just Give 'Em Whiskey" has stuff from The Prisoner, Westworld and The Andromeda Strain. -- Jon Drukman jsd@gamespot.com ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Plan: Eat right, exercise regularly, die anyway.

How can you miss all the samples from Once Apon A Time In The West? "Looks like wer're shy one horse. You are two too many..." "Sweetwater! It's just like him to call that dirty stinking peice of desert SWEETWATER!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAA!!!!" Too many in there to name including all the gun shot samples. The title alone is from the first sample I mentioned which is the first gun fight scene in Once Upon A Time In The West. It's a fantastic film. Probably the best spaghetti western ever made. The Orb also uses the harmonica from the film in one of their songs (I can't remember off the top of my head which one). -rbc3

There is such a list @ http://web.mit.edu/klund/www/cbox.txt As for playing out Colourbox songs i can remember reading an article a few years ago with Paul Oakenfold naming "Baby I Love You So" in his top 10 and saying how much he loved this song! Also Dave Thrussell from Snog, Black Lung, Soma, etc playing "The Offical Colourbox World Cup Theme" during his DJ set between Snog and Severed Heads playing live a few years ago here in Sydney. Great Band!! Regards, John
