G'day, --- Original Message --- From: Boffin <aphex@mtco.com> Anybody hear of this On-line record store called "iVMS". I ordered some really rare stuff from there...almost too good to be true items. Of course they didn't have them in stock, and I'm only receiving the Plaid EP (3.51 UKP). Anybody have any experience with them? Did anybody get what they wanted? --------------------------- If it's too good to be true, it usually is :-) I've used iMVS before - about 90% of what I order eventually (after about 3 months) gets cancelled as is 'deleted by manufacturer' :-( They even had an Atom Heart CD listed at UKP1.35 once - but of course it never showed up. In fact, I just got a message from iMVS today saying that a title I ordered back in December is 'deleted'. Cheers, Geoff

this seems to be a common ploy - albumsup also springs to mind - of luring punters w/ rarities, and only supplying the easily available stuff. i think it stinks. try 'em out first, order one of the hard to gets *and nothing else*, sit back and wait. even if they're only slow in removing deleted or unavailable items from they're site what is that gonna tell you about the rest of they're service. 5 months for a reply!! if you want reliable supply, and delivery w/in a couple of days to a week, and genuine supply of ltd and hard to get items, you can't go too far wrong w/ modern music and bent crayon. you know it makes sense. this wa not a paid commercial. thanx -martin

A hearty second to all that was written above, with the addition of David Hodgson's Playing By Ear thrown in (pbe@rt66.com). Once in a GREAT while these places can come through with the unexpected (e.g., I got "Pentamerous Metamorphosis" from imvs last December), but for the most part you'll be waiting in vain and wind up disappointed. Even big places from which you wouldn't expect this kind of thing ( e.g.,cdnow) do it. I'm still waiting to hear something on the oders I've placed for "Bel Air" and "A User's Guide" - and the only reason I went there was because I've tried a lot of other places w/ no luck) You'll find Coldcut's JDJ on a few sites which can't get it as well. It doesn't hurt to try if you do it with a 40 lb. bag of salt on hand (as opposed to the proverbial grain), but generally if it can be gotten, pj, John c. or David will have it and get it to you with the service you're looking for and more. Never been disappointed by these three. jeff -- dancing/about/architecture "...with wandering steps and slow..." ICQ 904008

As I understand it - most online only stores plug their web servers & database into a distributors stock list - eg - cdnow, cduniverse, musicblvd and Valley Distribution [valley I think is the largest distributor in the US it's catalog is like a very large phone book]. The distributor rarely has EVERY single piece in stock, in fact they generally only have the top sellers in stock, so when someone orders something 'rare' it's backordered by the distributor to the label, they usually wait 2-3 months, then the label says "oh it's been deleted ages ago mate, your lists should have been updated", the distributor sends the message back to the webstore and then the database is finally updated and you get an email saying it's gone. It's all to do with money and margins. The only online stores that don't do this are ones that are based in "real-world" stores or actually carry stock on hand, you should ask before you buy. lZi-808 -now enjoying Swayzak - Snowboarding in Argentina (medicine) nice VA - Endlessnessism 2xCD (DOT) fun Plastikman - Consumed (Novamute) dark and sexy ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
