Urm.... if I remember school correctly, calix is latin for a cup of some sort, and mira as praefix has usually something to do with extraordinary. Have Warp signed the AA?

Mmmmm.... I've seen the first thirty-something epsiodes on video (yes, I wear glasses, read most of Tolkiens work, dream of having sex with Troi, and can be generally considered a nerd, no, I don't have a girlfriend, and, no, I don't have anything better to do), and still feel that missus Janeway would have been better off commanding a Punch & Judy show at the local playground. Nelix gets increasingly irritating, Chakotay (whatever) keeps trying to imitate a piece of wood, and the Kaezon are still nowhere as scary, cunning, crypto-fascist or bold as the Klingons, the Romulans OR the bloody Cardassians. The doctor is funny, though the joke wears thin after a while. There's gonna be a few nice episodes (one were the doc has to cure the bio-neural gel packs of a virus infection, and one were B'Lana gets split in two persons - one 100% human and one 100% Klingon - though they screw it up by getting all sentimental at the end), but on the whole it's just TNG leftovers with a different cast. They've proven you can succesfully change an entire cast after twenty years an be even more cool & successful then before, but now they've also proven you can't do it twice (let alone three times). God, I miss the Borg. Maarten on now: Fat Boy Slim - Better Living Through Chemistry

Today was a good day! I got Blechsdottir and finally fixed the CD player so I could hear it all! It's a pretty crazy mix...lots of wierd tempo stuff, scratching and the like. Even if you've already got all the tracks on there, go buy this! Props to PC, Strictly Kev & the Warp crew for creating a wonderful journey thru some of the best music ever made! Which leads me to my question: Who is Mira Calix? There is a track that I didn't recognize & though I couldn't verify what track number it was (crappy CD-ROM player), I think it was Mira Calix. Anyone have any info on this artist? thanks, brock PS: Also got DMX crew and Leo Anibaldi today, can't wait to get home to hear 'em! Like I said, It was a good day! NP: Photek - Hidden Camera

bac> Who is Mira Calix? bac> Anyone have any info on this artist? No info. Just speculation ... There's also a Mira Calix track 'Khala' on the Eurowarp tape. This tape was given to the first 100 lucky people who came to the Warp concerts in Europe. All acts on that tape played at the concerts ... Except for Mira Calix. After some careful listening I decided that there's really only one person who loves making those high pitched sounds that try to buzz you out of your skull, whilst his soft background melodies give you a false sense of security. Some have imitated him. Rumour had it that he would play on the Warp tour. He didn't show. Somebody else (who's work with added distortion - in part - closely resembles that of the variable star) did show, but only at the Leysin festival. That somebody else: Squarepusher The variable star 'Mira': Richard D James Take your pick. Helen ->

Mira Calix is a new (previously unreleased) artist who wishes to remain anonymous. So 'Aphex Twin *is* Luke Vibert'esque (who remembers that oldie?) speculation is somewhat futile in this case. Does Star Trek Voyager improve? g.

Of course.

Gescom co-produced it, so that should give you a rough idea. 'Humba' -- dirty, gritty rhythms knitted into a 3/4 groove, tricking the ear into believing it's speeding up, but the tempo stays the same. Then a mu-Ziq style monotone melody gradually begins to surface. 'Khala' is a lot more soothing -- Seefeel style ambience. .+'''+. mark@sonance.demon.co.uk M A R K http://www.netlink.co.uk/users/sonance/ `+.,.+' http://www.sonance.demon.co.uk/

What I like about this one is the spontaneity of it- it sounds like it was done in one take- DEFINITELY the way that all the best tracks are done. It just gets a groove going. It is also yet another example of someone trying something that works and keeping it although it breaks every rule- Like, how much distortion is there on side 1? I think that Chantal DJ'd it at the big Chill Gala last year. I'm kinda wondering if she's done any stuff with Autechre which is co-written- this ep has a totally different writing style/vibe to Ae. It's obvious that she wrote (if not produced) it alone. I totally agree that everyone must have this one. Rich.

I like Boku Mo Wakaran much better. The beats on Samurai are fantastic too, but I think Bogdan went overboard with that annoying singing on a few tracks. I kept thinking while listening to it, "I wish he'd be quiet, so that I could hear the music better." In other words, I didn't feel like the singing added anything to the tracks. Some great percussion programming going on on Samurai, but yeah, that fucking whining! I think Aphex would have pulled it off better, RDJ integrates vocals samples really well in just about everything I think, hmmm, bar that Milkman song... do you think Aphex lost it there? I mean, proper lost it? :-) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

no way. milkman was perfect. the vocals weren't whiney at all. just sincere and heartfelt. well, that might be a stretch, but they weren't whiney, anyway. same with beetles. and in both cases, the music didn't suffer because of them. the music for milkman is great stuff! alan! np:acceleradeck:narcoticbeats On Wed, 29 Mar 2000, Paul Robinson wrote:

I have to say the Mira Calix 'One on One' is really growing on me. The tracks show a little more subtlety and complexity in the rhythms than either of the previous EPs. Plus the sonic pallette is a little wider and the vocals are appropriately used. It's funny though, none of these tracks seem really good in isolation (except "Upiyano"), but taken as a whole the release really flows. Hmm, on first listening didn't like it that much, I tended to skip through the CD quite a bit to find the good bits where it gets a bit more up-tempo but yeah, if you listen to it as a whole, the subtlety is brought out, a bit like staring into a stereogram for a while or listening to white noise on the radio. Like Plastikman's 'Consumed' this is one of those albums that you have to be patient with, it gets better. When in an impatient mood though, I find you can't beat a bit of Bogdan Raczynski for that instant mad beat fix! Excellent! Anyone heard the new Ep yet? Paul.

Totally agree. It's one of those slowly-creeps-into-your-brain kind of albums, rather than an instant hit (although there are a couple of tracks which do jump out at you first time). And I like it even more as I have one of the limited edition versions. :)

I haven't seen it anywhere yet, but I noticed it's available from warpmart. Theres audio clips on the rephlex web site too. Here's a question for you then - Samurai Math Beats or Boku Mo Wakaran? What's the limited edition got then?

I got Boku first so it has a lasting first impression, dunno, hard to say, might aswell have been a double album cos Samurai Math Beats is much the same thing, probably the reason why they were both released close together, there's more of that whiny-singing on Samurai which has a slight tendency to annoy which is short-lived as soon as the freaked out beats kick in! What's your fave? They're nothing compared to the lyrics at the end of funny little man. Now *that* is the product of a twisted mind!
