quoted 2 lines generally do you see idm as a superset or subset of all things electronic?

A friend of mine, who I think is a top notch IDM artist, tells me that when
he tries to describe his music to people who aren't aware of what IDM is, he
goes down a list of people to compare to his music starting at core IDM
artists and incresingly widening out to less IDM vs. more popular. Fatboy
Slim is where it usually ends.
Example:
Flashbulb (my friend) spots a cute girl in in a resuraunt and sparks up a
conversation in the hopes of getting a date. He lets her know that he is a
musician and her eyes light up with interest. Then she asks:
Hot girl: So what kind of music do you do?
Flashbulb: IDM
Hot girl: What's that?
Flashbulb: have you ever heard of Aphex Twin, or Richard D. James?
Hot girl: <blank stare>
Flashbulb: scorn, square pusher, u-ziq?
Hot girl: <blank stare>
Flashbulb: <stretchin against his will> ummmmmm how about orbital,
everything but the girl, or the chemical brothers?
Hot girl: <blank stare> (This is where he looses interest in the girl)
Flashbulb: <in exasperation> well how about Fatboy Slim?
Hot girl: <eye lighting up again> Oh yeah! Fatboy Slim is so talented, how
does he do all that cool stuff?
Flashbulb: Fatboy Slim is an untalented joke, a monkey could do what he
does. I have to go now.
Well that's the Fatboy Slim story, but your succint e-mail brings up a
powerful questions I think. I will address the whole superset or subset of
all electronic music in another e-mail. I think you bring up an interesting
point, which I have seen spread further than what is generally considered
electronic.
