1) Thanks to all the peeps who responded so thoroughly to my electric company question the other day. 2) Has anyone heard (or even seen) the new dual disc Not Breathing release on Invisible? I've been a fan of dave's work for the past several years, and am kind of wondering what to expect when I go to see them this friday in Los Angeles. gracias. .. brian rachielles audio@rain.org http://www.rain.org/~audio AUDIO: kcsb 91.9 fm santa barbara idm/ambient thurs midnight-3 IDM REVIEW ARCHIVE: archived reviews of idm related releases MANIC MARTIAN WEB DESIGN: web sites for sale

I've only listened to the set once through so here's a brief synopsis: Disc 1: If I recall, it's a continuous mix for a majority of the tracks and quite danceable, sort of trancey with a hard edge to it. Disc 2: Much more appealing to me, dark ambient soundscapes with an industrial tinge. I picked it up because he had worked with DVOA(Mark Spybey) and had heard some of his remixes of DVOA's work on an Invisible compilation. IMHO, buy it, not only is it good but you get two discs for the price of one. Ross

I haven't heard the new disc(s), but having a lot of his unreleased tapes and having played with him at some gigs, I'd describe his '95-97 stuff as being dark FSOL-like, uh, "beatscapes", similar to FSOL in that there are beautiful and/or dark ambient passages between carefully-programmed techno beats. If Drew is playing with Dave, he'll create some really nice atmospheric sounds on bass and synth (and sometimes dige..) Not Breathing's cd covers show Dave's obsession with devil-nymph-women (whatever, dave!) but don't let that mislead you about what the music is like, there is no satanic chants or Whitehouse therein! yes, i'm listening to it now. the first disc is fucked-up techno stuff, similar to dave's first lp "time music of quazars" but much cleaner...a lot of 4/4 dance stuff, but seriously trancy with lots of squelchiness, analog sequencer-ish patterns, and lots of feeding back delays and stuff. the second disc is largely beatless, droning evil ambient stuff with all sorts of weird noises floating about, similar to the stuff dave puts on the cassettes he distributes... i don't know what to expect from them live, i don't know whether it will be techno-y or not. probably some of each. there are three or four people in the band when they play live, it's not just one guy tweaking knobs. i'll see in person soon, if dave remembers to put me on the guest list... np: not breathing "heliopause" "a dream is worth a thousand pictures, the mouths of lampreys a thousand more..."
