It came out earlier this year, somewhere in the spring I think. Tracks are: 1. Q loop 2. e2e4 basic reshape 3. Mutism 4. Quadrant dub 1 edit 5. Radiance ii edit 6. Lyot remix edit 7. Presence edit 8. Q1.1 edit 9. Q1.2 10. Radiance i 11. Radiance iii edit Or that's what I make of the backwards spelled funny font fifth-generation xerox tracklisting. 1,2,3 & 9 are new tracks, the other ones from some of the previous BC releases. All the harder tracks were left out. Totally brilliant if you ask me. Bye, M

Finally got the Basic Channel compilation as well Ken Ishii's Jelly Tones, both of which were quite impressive. Thanks to everyone who recommended places to me that carry these releases. On the Basic Channel compilation, though - it's quite sedated, to the point that I'd call it ambient (although some might disagree). Now this Cyrus character (tracks 1&5) - has he released any full- lengths of his own? His 'inversion' (track 5) is quite interesting, and sounds vaguely West African, and I'm hoping he does more stuff in this vein. On this note, has anyone heard any releases that incorporate other ethnic rhythms (preferably Brazillian, North/West African, Caribbean, or Middle Eastern), not via samples of recordings but rather reconstructed via drum machines? Richard H. Kirk and Muslimgauze are the only two artists I can think of, but maybe there are others. Thanks, GD

I picked this up today as well and am of course mightily impressed. The impossible to open, glued shut, cardboard packaging is interesting too. I though it was pretty well chilled... Not quite as chilled as the Panasonic Vakio sampler thing (swirly coloured vinyl wotsit). wow. like minimal, and stuff. Also got a nice new trad. techno thing on a new label called Aphelion by someone called Zugwangz or something. Nice melodic(ish) stuff. g303 g The WARP Web Site 3 0 3 http://www.inta.net/~g303/warp/

Indeed. My only real complaint about this comp is that it doesn't represent the primary (IMO) facet of the label -- their ability to driving, soulful, and yes, vaguely _creepy_ intelligent _dance_ music within the strictures of what is, essentially, house. What makes a track like, for example, "M04" so cool is that it puts all this weird sonic context inside of a track alongside a reassuring thumping 808. Food for the dancefloor, mindfood for the headz. :) None of the really boomy stuff (Phylyps Trak, Maurizio, etc.) made it onto the comp, and the version of "Lyot" there has all the cool scary thudding remixed out. That said, it's fine for "coolin' out, chillin' out, relaxin'", to quote a Wagon Christ sample. Unrelated weird observation: The Sci-Fi channel is having "Planet of the Apes" week. It's positively littered with sample-spots: the GC boys raided the first in the series ("perverted scientists", "missing like in the evolutionary chain") and Orbital hit the second one (the nuclear "Lord's Prayer" in [I think] "Oolaa") -- dave walker, detroit art services _ marmoset@mich.com born freeke Dave Walker

OK So I hate Death in Vegas, Underworld and Primal Scream. Might I suggest better counterexamples -- Bowery Electric, Labradford, Seefeel, and My Bloody Valentine. <<< if you like the latter stuff, you should check out what mogwai do to david holmes's "don't die just yet", starts out all echoey ambient, ends up screaming meltdown ambient. a drum machine does a little drum'n'bass fungle malfunction in about the last 10 seconds, as i guess some kind of ironic nod towards dance music. their "young team" lp is also a good example of quiet/noisy guitar ambience. don't know if its guitars, or just studio fuzz, but after initially not really getting much out of it, the porter ricks "biokinetiks" cd, has been on heavy repeat during a recent bout of programming. its amazing how 70+ mins of hazy thud-thud can go by. the eponymous mille plateaux release, doesn't really have the same feel. are other basic channel releases similar to "biokinetiks"? a local store has the vainquer and maurizio cds in the metal tins - are either similar? do i need both? -martin

All of the Basic Channel/Maurizio/Chain Reaction cds are worth having and all have that similar "hazy thud-thud" sound to varying degrees. The list of cds to get in order of preference but really all are must haves: . Porter Ricks: Biokinetiks cd (Chain Reaction) . Monolake: Hong Kong cd (Chain Reaction) . Maurizio comp cd (M) . Basic Channel v/a comp cd (Basic Channel) . Decay Product v/a comp cd (Chain Reaction) . Vainqueur: Elevations cd (Chain Reaction) -->-Lance--- p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states

i agree with lance, you need 'em all. if funds are tight (like they ever aren't), my order would be a bit different with basic channel and maurizio clocking at #1 and #2, respectively, if only for historical context. i also suspect that kasey kasem will be racking a fast riser for this berlintopten with the upcoming chain reaction "substance" CD. tense, emotional, sonically high strung suspenseful beauty. CR05 and CR18 are pure classics in my book, and having these combined with a few new substance tracks is going to make for a pure gem. The Basic Channel CD is awesome. I would defintely hunt down BC01 because the Jeff Mills remix was awesome. While BC03 has the Basic Channel remix of Lyot, I would also recommend tracking down Vainqueur's - Lyot with the Maurizio remix on the flip.
