We all know about the various aliases of Richard H. Kirk, but does anyone have the scoop on Stephen Mallinder's whereabouts or activity? I believe that he is producing records, I just don't know what name or label or release or date... Thanks. .JohnBush.

On the other hand, I've heard that he is now living in Australia, happily married and no longer producing music of any sort. Greg

Well if you were on the CV mailing list, you'd know these things:) I can't verify the married happily part, but he does live in Australia, and he does still produce music, most recently under the name Sassi & Loco, a collaboration with Travis Calley . I think they also recently remixed a Sneaker Pimps track, though I don't have the details on that one. No, Mallinder. I expect Kirk will keep up his disc-a-month habit for sometime to come. :-) Greg

I can confirm that Mallinder is in Perth WA as i live here too. He hosts a local (community) radio show a few nights a week as well as djing at local events. These are some quotes from an interview in a local paper: " Tell me about you other activities. I've got my label, and I do Sassy and Loco which is me and travis and Cooling brothers which is where i do mixes for people from all over - the uk, Australia and all sorts of things. I do RTR (radio)... " "I've got my studio, I do my mixes, run my label, write. I work for three of the labels over here as well. I kind of just dabble in bits of all kinds of musicand thats the way i work. I've been asked to write a book, so i will go back to England and do that." His label is called Offworld Sounds and he mentions in association with it: Soundlab - breakbeats, drumnbass Echoic/Exponents Red Ember - electronic house Bluejay - drum nbass Sassy and Loco - house to drumnbass to real kinda groovy stuff Yummy Fur - 'a band' ie more of a typical rock setup w/ electronic effects (kinda new ordery from what little i've heard) Well thats most of the informative stuff from the interview the rest is him talkign about djing and local scene stuff. I guess i could try and find out cat numbers etc for releases if ppl are interested or even help ppl acquire some of his local releases - email me if you are interested. I cant comment on his djing skills as ive not seen/heard him (tho he is big on the local scene). josh perth, wa np - speedy j - public energy #1 ps had the privelidge of seeing speedy j play live at a local festival recently. He was amazing! He played for about 1.5 hours starting off with what i vaguely recognized as ni go snix and ending with patterns. I think ni go snix (snix) was also in there as well as one of the tracks from g-spot. Very little melodic ambience (ie early stuff) but heaps of thundering crunchy beats, and great washes of noise. Even the tracks i recognised were totally reworked (he was tweaking away th whole time) the beats in patterns were sometimes broken down into even more progressions of beats (ie where on the cd there is one beat he replaced it with multiple beats). THis set really made me realise how brilliant this music is and how true all of jochem's talk of 'new direction' and 'another level' is. The set was undescribable - totally blissful. If u get the chance go see him. I had cramps in my legs but refused to stop dancing. THose of you who have l!ve will no that speedy j does a dancier interpretation of his stuff playing live. THios is equally true of his newer stuff the beats were all complex but at the same time thumping and groovey. I couldnt believe how beautiful he made sheer noise sound! Well enuf of my drooling (i think ive said enuf for a lurker!)
