Has anyone heard the new As One album "Art of Prophecy" ? Any reviews ? Also, anyone know where I can pick up a copy (mail order ?) as I've not seen that French label Shield around much. Does the As One 12" that was out on Shield a while back have any tracks not on the album. If anyone can let me know where I can pick up either of the above I'd appreciate it. Also looking for a copy of the Celestial Soul album (New Electronica) - willing to buy or trade any of the above. Cheers, Simon.

Anyone heard the new As One album on Clear, "In With Their Arps...." or something like that ? Thought I read somewwhere that it's the same as "The Message in Herbie's Shirts" but with some extra tracks included. This true or is it all new material ? The man like Kirk is well on form these days with the latest "Art of Prophecy" album blowing most other releases out of the water and a Mo' Wax release to follow - any word on a release date for this ? cheers, Simon.

I heard this too but I have a 3-track white label of 'In With Their Arps' and none of the tracks are on the Herbie LP. It also contains probably his best material since 'Reflections'... "In With Their Arps" will be the "The Message In Herbie's Shirts" 2xLP plus the three new tracks according to the Clear site. I didn't care for "Herbie" on the first few listens, but it grew one me. I haven't heard "Art Of Prophecy" yet, but I worry the Kirk DeG is suffering from Richard H. Kirk disease by producing the same music over and over. Paul Rafanello intone@warwick.net

hello I don't know if this has been covered before but I own 'Planetary Folklore' on vinyl and it contains 6 tracks. The CD has 10. Should I be upset, or does it make for an LP more in the vein of old Blue Note LPs (which according to the sleeve notes is what he had in mind)? Cheers, Nick

That all depends on how much you love those 6 tracks. If you really like them very much, then you're well within your rights to consider yourself short-changed coz you're getting less than the dude who bought the CD. If on the other hand, you paid less to start with and you've got the best tracks there and the rest are 'fillers', then enjoy the ones you've got. I had the CD and traded it... The CD version of "In With Their Arps..." compiles all of the tracks from the 12" EP of the same name along with an earlier 2x12" called "The Message in Herbie's Shirt" and one other track that I don't know the name of since I own the two vinyl releases. Greg

Not too long ago we talked about this same thing... Pay attention folks. Anyway: here's the tracklisting to all three releases. There's really nothing more on Clear by As One, but it seems like we have a similar problem with his latest MoWax release (there's one 12", one LP and one CD, each with different tracklistings)... Somebody posted a Kirk Degiorgio discog. a while back, and with all of the discussion of classic 313 sounding releases my interest has been piqued. So what I was wondering was if his _Reflections_ (?) and _Reflections on Reflections_ albums on New Electronica are all that. I suppose they are, so does anyone know of any 2nd hand stores that would carry such titles? It's difficult to appreciate great music if you've never heard it ... Thanks for any help. Reflections is really really nice and delicate Detroit-ish stuff but Reflections on Reflections is REALLY dope. Carl Craig, Balil, Russ Gabriel and others contribute stellar, timeless, almost niave sounding tracks. In fact The Russ Gabriel mix is one of the most beautiful techno tracks I have ever heard. Unfortunately I have never seen a copy of it other than the time I bought mine:), But I can't imagine the stuff would be too hrad to track down. On the other hand most of the other New Electronica comps and the Op Art stuff is pretty damn hard to get ahold of... good luck! PS I have found some NE used stuff at Mondo Kims in NYC, you might try there although I don't know of they do phone/mail order stuff... On Thu, 9 Mar 2000, James R McPherson wrote:

Ah, a favourite topic. Indeed, the early As One releases are exactly what one would call "classic" IDM. Starting with Reflections, a beautiful record with depth and emotion galore. Then there's Celestial Soul, an excursion into more jazz-influenced electronica (a few tracks on that were released on the We No Longer Understand EP). Reflections On Reflections is quite a collection of remixes of tracks from Reflections. At some point there was an EP consisting of Mihara and Dance of the Uighurs, I guess it was before the release of Reflections since both tracks are featured on it (so my timeline is a bit off, but I'm typing this off the top of my head in bed with a laptop :). All of the above were on New Electronica, I guess they're quite tough to come by nowadays (aren't they all?). Then there were the releases on Clear, one album released under two names, first on vinyl as The Message On Herbie's Shirts and later as In With Their Arps and Jazz and Things (with more tracks than on the original vinyl version - the extra tracks were released as a separate EP on vinyl, "Triumphant" as I recall), more of the jazz-electronica fusion of Celestial Soul. I still consider Epic (from The Message.../In With...) to be one of best ever DeGiorgio tracks, a slowly building 10-minute track of truly epic proportions. Continuing with the jazz thing, there was the album on Mo'Wax, Planetary Folklore. With more jazz than electronica, I was a bit baffled at first but gradually started to appreciate it, especially the track sung by Luca Santucci (who also sings on Leila's album on RePHLeX). Really jazzy, not everyone's cup of (insert favourite beverage here). Then, there's the Art Of Prophecy on Shield (a French label), a bit of a return into the earlier "classic" IDM sound, but with experimentation in drum'n'bass, even. Quite a diverse package, with a remix EP with a remix of Theme From Op-Art by Stasis. Of course, besides the full-lengths there are numerous appearances on various labels, his own (A.R.T. and Op-Art), New Electronica, B12, Likemind, Otherworld and others. I haven't seen a comprehensive discography, but I think I'm quite well off with having those that I've mentioned here and lots of others. I can compile a partial discography out of them unless someone (Lance? :) has a full one. So, the timeline sucks but I'm too damn lazy to get up and check the release years from the records. A note off to AeOtaku - you're probably right about the matter of sort of waiving the copyright issue on out-of-print releases, but I'm still a bit uneasy about it. There's the huge work of actually digitising the records, and since I don't like to trade MP3s or CDRs, what am I getting out of the deal? A honorable mention and a reputation of a good guy? I'm not that altruistic (yet :P). -- nuutti-iivari meriläinen gordon at diversion dot org http colon slash slash www dot diversion dot org slash --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

J >> My take is that Reflections is a great, but subtle album. Unlike Reload it doesn't make you think and unlike Balil or Likemind it doesn't just sit there as ridiculously enchanting rhythms swirl around. It's very mellow, non-confrontational and a great background piece. There aren't any standout tracks, it's just a nice melodic journey. A classic album, yes, but not one for all occasions. For my money Kirk's best stuff by far is the A.R.T. era Future/Past, especially his tracks on the two A.R.T. CD comps which are just stellar. Tracks like "Nebula Variation" and "Try 2004 Funk" blow his home listening material out of the water, as good as it is, and I think are Kirk's best attempt to be on the level of the Detroit heroes, which it seemed at the time he was very interested in. Reflections on Reflections is all remixes by various artists, and while it is a stellar line-up (Balil, Max 404, Carl Craig, etc. etc.) the album isn't as good as you'd think. One of the problems I think is that the artists try to make this material work on the hooks and the techno sensibilities, which it doesn't. As the Reflections liner notes explain, As One is the alias for Kirk's mellow home listening stuff, Future/Past is the alias for the mindblowers. Also check Kirk's 12" on B12, as this showcases both sides of his old sound. Kirk is still around (I'm waiting on his new 12" in the mail) but I haven't really loved anything of his like I love the old Future/Past. Hmm, I have to disagree! Reflections on Reflections is nothing short of mindblowing for me, but Im super biased by the Russ Gabriel rmx of Shambala. BTW, is there any other Russ Gabriel material out there? I had not heard of him (knowingly) prior to RoR and Im guessing I need to seek more of his output ernie Ernesto Ikerd, (817) 763-4795 Company Graphics, Dept 17, MZ-4202 Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company Fort Worth, Texas --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

He released a 10" on Planet E in 1996 as Fusion. It's quite nice, but as far as i know it's not in print anymore. He probably released more stuff as Fusion, so you night want to look into that. speaking of Degiorgio, i just picked up the Super A-Loof 12", a collaboration between KDG and Jamie Odell of Jimpster fame....it's utterly fantastic, the best of both these artist's recent jazz work melded into a more cohesive whole. mikebee --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Guessing you heard this already, and I'm guessing the list gets this message because of the horrendous auto-reply but Russ Gabriel has a mountain of material out there and runs the Ferox label. Lots in that melodic tech-house vein, definitely more floor-suited and accessible. Much like the better Matrix, Ian O'Brien, Paul Mac, etc. Matt --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
