I bought the G&E album a while back, after kinda liking the little audio clips that NK put up on their web site. G&E has a few tracks that are produced / remixed by Autechre and Disjecta and maybe Sun Electric as well. Fairly solid remixes if I remember, with the Autechre one being less crazy than the one on NMtD2 and more of a dirty, slow, downbeat type of thing. The non-remixed material is ok. Very pretty-sounding synthpop with high-pitched (if not unpleasant) vocal stylings by the two female members. If you like Japanese pop or new wave in general, it's a good buy. Needless to say, Autechre completists should probably get it. Speaking of which, I'm rediscovering a lot of old Autechre vinyl, which didn't grab me at first but which I'm ODing on lately: Keynell original on Skam, Keynell remix on Warp, the Warp special 12", Gescom 12" on Clear, remix of Lexis for Cert18, etc. etc. etc. Good stuff. It seems this is one of the qualities that Autechre have for many people. I find I love almost all their stuff immediately. (Starting with Incunabula, which within a week was my favourite album of '93.) But my good friend Simon Walley (CiM, known to many of you) has recently had the same experience as JAmes here - just finding that Autechre tunes keep finding their way back to his turntable even though they didn't really grab him first time round. I asked her to pick out all the different things going on in the tune. At each point she'd say maybe three or four, and I'd point out some extra stuff going on that is very subtle. Then she started to notice how different rythms slowly morph and melt their way around the track, how two totally disjoint sounds slowly start to clash and eventually combine to form even more beautiful sounds and rythms. After about 15 minutes I told her to stop analysing it, that Ae don't do all this neat stuff just because they can, that the whole piece is sculpted and shaped from start to finish in this way, with sounds blending and melding, and rythms overlapping and clashing. All six of the keynells were listended to. She's not a notal convert yet, but I think she understands my obsession a bit better, and recognises their genious more. I go to see Autechre this Friday in Dublin for the first time ever. I haven't been this excited since I stopped believeing in Santa Claus! -hjw

Perhaps this is a very bizarre question, but since most of Autechre's track- titles seem to be picked from out of the air and with no distinct etymology, why is the cichlisuite so "fish" heavy? Cichli is a family of fish, and krib and tilapia are common names for a specific specie and genus of cichlids, respectively. Yeesland is, I believe a locale in Africa where many beautiful cichlids can be found. Perhaps the most pressing question is why in the hell do I know all this and why should I (or any of you, for that matter) care? Anyway, I figured its the ultimate trainspotter question, so if anybody has an answer regarding Ae's seeming piscesobsession I'd love to know. Thanks, James np: uhh ... cichlisuite

On the other hand, what could the Envane tracks signify? 902 Quarter, Goz Quarter, Latent (?) In the Volume8 interview, and in other places, they've said that the track names are mostly "in jokes", that noone but they would understand. I think they just have a _need_ to be cryptic. Che

Funny...I've always thought Incunabula was Autechre's worst album. The tunes are simplistic to the extent of being trivial, the sound is thin, the sounds are more or less "out of the box" (=boring) and not nearly as interesting as their later material (which, more or less, I think is close to fantastic). There's a feeling of disinterestedness (!?) through the entire CD and it almost hasn't visited my CD-player since I bought it.

I haven't got any proof, but Autechre might have gotten their idea for the marble-sounds from British electroacoustic composer Jonty Harrison. I don't remember the name of Harrison's CD (it's on Canadian label empreintes DIGITALes if anyone wants to check it out), but on it he has constructed a fantastic 15-20 minute piece consisting of nothing but the manipulated sound of various wine-glass sounds. The "glassiness" of the piece is so beautiful; lots of time-stretching and smearing. Autechre's marbles sound very similar.

i see what you're saying about 'out of the box' sounds, kind of like vulva. but much like vulva, it's excellent use of these sounds. it's an early album, they were different musicians then, they had different gear then, they made excellent music still. it's just a matter of gear to tell the truth, as far as what makes incunabula's sound. but i play it a lot, mostly because it's so chill and soft. sometimes weak, but it's understandable. when i first got it i didn't think it was really autechre, but it was a pleasant suprise, like "wow! i didn't know they were capable of this sound, it's really nice." a nice break from their otherwise abrasive material. -eric _____________________________________________________ :: eric sherman szale@doubtful.com :: :: doubtful productions www.doubtful.com ::

'out of the box' meaning unaffected and purely straight from the machines they used. like the pure 606 and 808 drum sounds. i wasn't comparing them to vulva in any other way other than to show that vulva too uses some pure, 'out-of-the-box' sounds and it comes together nicely. it works. i was merely saying vulva pulls it off too. i'm assuming this album was written before either the technology was available, before they had teh money to buy such technology, or before they had a care to use such technology as they work with now. they simply had different machines with which to make thier music.

I think it is indeed a matter of what equipment they owned, (not having much money being a contribting factor), and them not experimenting as much with the sounds they were using.
