In a message dated 98-01-30 20:36:19 EST, you write: << extensive, tends to be overstated. as popular as "planet rock" was and is, it was a typical arthur baker/john robie bite, and better examples of old-school new york electro-funk exist. >> bite? from Arthur Baker? He produced it!!! No lie, check the credits. But I know what you mean about "overstated" - but isn't that what some (well, a lot) of the hip-hop culture is about anyway? (disclaimer for all y'all: I love hip hop, especially some NYC underground shit like Company Flow, so don't take that the wrong way) The reason that Planet Rock is looked at by everyone as THE electro track is because it's a rap music (and sampling/production) milestone, it was incrediblly popular, whereas Hip-Hop-Be-Bop was a bit more of a kitchy club number (slammin' as it is...) Now, I'm all for electing Paul Hardcastle (pre "19") to the enjoyably cheesy electro hall of fame. Can't live without my "King Tut" and "Rainforest" 12"s -John

is as well as the fact that the label could kick back royalties from the copywrite of somekind of sample of something.. .....i think it was that GRINDCORE break from that inovative band from germany or cali or something. H
