Do you have the Semtex album and 12" (which is getting hard to find, so if you see it, I would buy it...)? I would get these before getting In Version, because they're more consistent (well, The Semtex 12" is just two songs, one of which is _amazing_ if a bit "normal" for the TEF, neither of which are on Semtex the album). In Version has some wonderful segments, but a lot of it is devoted to the kind of Bristol guitar sound they came from, which is not terribly IDM at all (which might not bother you, but it seems to bother some people an inordinate amount). None of it sounds like Ghost at all, really, except in tone. "Sound of Violence" is Ghostish, but in a very different way. I still haven't decided if I like it - really brutal, uncompromising, noisy "drill and bass" (a far more apt description for this ep than for Squarepusher, except there's no bass). Personally, I just buy them all. --- the humble abbott arthur purvis set his hand hereto

Third Eye Foundation is pretty much in a category by itself. I was lucky to see him play live, and his new material is the sort of mutant breakbeat stuff that seems like the future of something, if not electronic music... One of his best tracks is a remix for bowery electric on the Vertigo remix CD (dual CD, cheap in the US). I like the "in version" CD a lot. If I had a complaint about the 3rd eye stuff its that his lo-fi production ethic takes away some impact from his tracks. Makes me want to remix his stuff to add a little space back in.

From: Carved from a Block of Gouda <kent@inav.net> : Third Eye Foundation is pretty much in a category by itself. I was : lucky to see him play live, and his new material is the sort of mutant : breakbeat stuff that seems like the future of something, if not : electronic music... you know, interestingly, when i saw him live he played a bunch of new material (i think it was, anyway, and i've got most/all of his releases) and it was almost totally beatless. just kind of gentle bass throbs and pulses overlaid with concretized turkish musique samples. it was beautiful stuff, i wish i had a tape of it. : I like the "in version" CD a lot. If I had a complaint about the 3rd eye : stuff its that his lo-fi production ethic takes away some impact from : his tracks. Makes me want to remix his stuff to add a little space back : in. another interesting point - i read an interview with matt/3ef in which he kind of dissed flying saucer attack's lo-fi ethic and talked about how he wasn't opposed to using multi-track recorders, etc. i think a lot of the lo-fi quality of "ghost" comes from his heavy use of samples which he pitches down extremely, giving them a grainy, low resolution texture. "sound of violence" is pretty well-produced, though. gaa, [grievous@netaxs.com] [http://www.netaxs.com/~grievous/] "no more dinosaurs, no more trees couldn't find the vinyl, no record stores."
