you don't like jazz? ok.. but do we need the sarcasm? it is clear that many people on this list also like Miles, and i started the thread w/ a "not completely idm-related" disclaimer ;) keep in mind this is not regular jazz, just as idm is not regular techno :) and a lot of idm is funky just as this is. it has got some breakbeat-ish drums too! .... grav

yep bitches brew is great... however i think 'on the corner' is up there as well.. black satin is a 4th world classic... wah wah trumpet and tabla, with a crazy synth bass guitar line (some sort of mutator bass pedal) ...sigh... from about 1975 i think... it isnt like his really awful cheesy late seventies/early eighties stuff either. Bitches Brew is *amazing* Funki Porcini credits on some release, and listening to this, I imagine that many other artists must also... I have Funny Valentine (believe thats it) Live that I would consider some beautiful ambient material... highly recommend this also... I really love posts like this one. Not only has the writer managed to insult the music this list was created around, but also calling other list'ers "fools". How about we just kill the whole thing before it becomes a "Miles is more musically viable than IDM" debate that will rage for weeks... how about the "Miles is not IDM" debate that seems potentially necessary?

I think that to enter into the world of Miles Davis *in terms of this list*, one should, without a doubt, start with Bitches Brew, then work your way forewards and backwards from there. The record is THE fulcrum at the point of Miles Davis of the Future, and Miles Davis of the Past, regardless of all the other milestones (no pun intended) he took modern music through (like the Gil Evans era). You don't simply pick a Miles LP, listen to it, and move on to other things. You either learn music history (while having your head blown off) or you don't. If you don't know Miles, I can only assume that there's a whole lot else you don't know, so keep in mind that he, for all he is, is only one player in a huge game of musical development. Happy hunting! Charlie James

I'd say 'Kind of Blue' is truly a classic - all analog sounds in a more trad jazz stylee (hence less IDM-related), but well worth your while. A good second purchase after 'Bitches Brew'. If the Miles Davis stuff get you going, check out the Ornette Coleman/Pat Metheny 'Song X' collaboration, Ornette Coleman/Prime Time's 'In all Languages', or any of the releases by the group 'Earthworks' (featuring Bill Bruford). Jazz using electronic instrumentation that'll blow yer lid. GD

Nice stuff all Longtime IDM subscribers know I periodically flog this puppy: Weather Report "Sweetnighter" -- unfortunately Sony Music has never reissued this on CD or vinyl. Superfunky jazz-rock dream team -- Joe Zawinul, Wayne Shorter, Airto Moriera, Miroslav Vitous, Eric Gravatt... Columbia EC 32210 Airto -- FINGERS (CTI SLIB177) Airto Moreira is a Brazilian percussionist who played with everyone in the 70's. "Fingers" is his debut American album. Very melodic, rhythmically dense stuff on the brazilian tip. A huge chunk of a track from this record was sampled on a recent Nuyorican Soul record. By the way, ANYTHING you see on CTI from the 70s is worth having. They always stand out because they have super glossy covers with a black border surrounding a bright color picture. Horacee Arnold "Tales of the Exonerated Flea" Columbia KC 32869 Extremely rare and out of print and my copy is rather thrashed ;-( Polyrhythmic, odd time signatures, minimoog wailing, and pre-Philip Glass minimal hypnotic loopiness. If ANYONE finds a copy of this in good condition I will pay up to $30 for it. Going further afield: Chick Corea "Light as a Feather" -- before Chick twinked out and became a scientologist, before the dreadful "Romantic Warrior" period noodle-wanking, this was the album. Also featuring Flora Purim on vocals and Airto on traps, this contains the almost unbearably dreamy "500 miles high" which is floaty and funky in turns.

By the way, ANYTHING you see on CTI from the 70s is worth having. They always stand out because they have super glossy covers with a black border surrounding a bright color picture. I agree, and on this point, try others by Airto, and also Deodato. They have a cover of Nights In White Satin (which I hate the original), and it is a beautifully moving ambient piece, nothing like the original.
