Re-view: Quant / Breaking and Entering / Dot Records / DOT1207 / Releasedate: 09.26 Tracks: A1. Once Upon a Quant | 06:22 A2. Picka Dicka | 06:37 B1. Rubba Wogga Man | 06:20 B2. Rubba Wogga Man (Hab's Habba Wabba Shake) | 06:07 I guess I should be doing other things, but I can't wait to tell you people about this. Helmets on, this is the bomb. Finally - the long awaited second EP from Dot's own golden calf Quant hits the earth. Til today his first ep "Quant ep" was the strongest effort put out by anyone of the Dot posse, but now I've have to say that there's a new master in Dotlandia. It's name is "Breaking and Entering" This 4 track extended player is a funky vibey electro drum n bass trip on the Clear tip multiplied by eternity. It's brilliant from start --> end and the groove never stops. It's Jake Slazenger married to Doctor Rockit with Squarepusher, Morgan Geist, Mr Scruff, Kraftwerk, Jedi Knights, Grandmaster Flash and Amon Tobin as bridesmaids, and the following marriageparty carries on forever. It's (so far) the 12" of the year. If this piece of work doesn't take Quant to the stars, I dunno what will. Judging from the first "Quant" ep and this one, his "Quantastical Quantasms" will easily be next year's "Hard Normal Daddy". No wonder Coldcut wanted Quant to remix their next "Timber" single. He's fucking made of honey. I lack words really. He is an unprecedented vocoderguru with sugar on top. The first track is a beautiful work in the same vein as "I Like It" on the first EP. You don't know funky in 1997 until you've heard this track, funky, spunky electro with a touch of drum and bass. No lack of wet basses nor pitchbends here, no. Great starter, but hold on, it's getting better. "Picka Dicka" is a track that carries more of the force than all Skywalkers in the world. If Obi Wan was to record a track it would sound like this. The force is certainly with Quant, no doubt. Disco. However, it's not until we bump into B2, "Rubba Wogga Man" that we get to see this single's top notch. A straight heavy groove as the driving force accompanied by (once again) an oldskool wet killerbass, harmonies with a puffy eye factor of 15/10 and the Quant feel to it all. Heureka (or whatever)! These three first tracks is the cream of the Dotlandia society. This is about as good as it gets. The Hab rework of "Rubba Wogga Man" is, well, Habish. That's really all there is to it, it's a very good remix, but for us who have got "Mapod" and "Hab ep" he might try and twiddle forward some new sounds. It's the Hab sound with the Hab delay and it's getting a bit tiring actually. He should either twiddle some or buy a new machine. He can't possibly continue like this on another release. It bears resemblance to the µ-ziq distorteddrumsproblem that Paradinas has got. Anyway, it's a great track, light drum and bass with ambient touches and weirdness. I listen to the three first ones again, still as wonderful. Now, after 8-9 listens it's even better, this is magic from the land of milk and honey, Dotlandia. I still haven't played the new Roupe 12" (with Friend and Metamatics remixes) I got, I'm too stuck in the wonderful release, but don't worry, I'll get to it, I just need a couple of more days with this one, I can't get enough. Helmet won't help, I'm already blewn away. I can safely say that I won't be able to find this. In fact, I can safely say that I've never *ever* seen *any* DOT release in any shop anywhere in the UK. Where CAN I GET THEM??? - Ben (frustrated beyond belief at reading all this good stuff about DOT, but not hearing any) -- Ben Coffer Hybrid Productions http://www.hybridgame.demon.co.uk/

there's always modern music or synaptic if you're up to ordering from the us... you know, in alot of record stores, i see Dot bins and they are always empty... never thought about it, but I wonder if this is because people buy it all up, or they just simply never have any Dot stuff to put on the shelves... I really wanted to buy *everything* released after the knights comp a few weeks back, but couldn't find any of it anywhere... very annoying... have to take my own advice pretty soon here... Make a good friend at one of these stores. I was able to order all of the Dot back catalog from a small dj supply store in fort worth two weeks ago. Everything I had missed since the Friend + Dr. Kosmos double pack arrived in a matter of days. Dot goods usually turn up in the restocks section of most distributor's weekly faxes. Plus, Jason aka MaxAlert usually has Dot gear in his restocks. Go to http://www.sonic.net/~brap/ and follow the link to Slip Disc. Speaking of Dot, is the Endlessism comp going to be available on 2xCD only, or will a vinyl version be available too? g.

See http://www.mindrecords.vip.fi or http://www.mindrecords.com for details. np: Skampler (finally I got this one, thanks to Mind! :) pHinn the maintainer of pHinnWeb - the old skool, the nu skool and the pHuture skool of Finnish electronic music trerra@uta.fi | http://www.uta.fi/~trerra | http://www.sci.fi/~phinnweb
