Ok... I've posted too much about technical/legal issues today, so here's my brief review of the new Eat Static full-length, "Science of the Gods". Basically, about half of it is in the drum-n-bass style. There is a lot of weirdness to listen to, but not nearly as weird as say Squarepusher. The sound of Eat Static has always included a lot of what I term to be "organic" sounds, in that there's usually a lot of depth to each piece among the varied sounds. But as a whole, I'd have to rate this new one at the bottom of the stack. In a nutshell, it didn't move me. Not that everything I buy has to be an earth-shattering ground-breaking release, but this one just kind of leaves me in the same place I started. There are a few bits in some of the tracks that are pretty good, but the depth that I referred to above didn't really show through. A definite buy if you find it cheap, but if you're torn between the new Luke Slater and this one (like I was), definitely go for the Slater first. -- jr
