Sorry, to flood the list, but just to let all the lawyers out there know: Neither Space nor ANY FAX production is Copywritten!. If someone were very unethical and just plain horrible, they could actually copyright any/all of the Fax productions and claim royalties for all releases of them! Scary...... A. The word is "copyrighted," and you're wrong. You should read up on the Berne convention. All published and unpublished creative works by authors (including composers) in subscribing countries (I believe both Germany and the UK are members; I know the US is) are *automatically* protected by copyright, unless the author *specifically* indicates that it is a public-domain work.

I can't wait until Peter Kuhlmann, Tetsu Inoue, Bill Drummond, and Jim Cauty's lawyers get through with you. Your ignorance and naivete are staggering. Ever wonder why copyright notices on records indicate that "lending" is prohibited? Hint: it's because lending is prohibited, especially the sort of wink-wink open-ended lending you're dealing in. Standard disclaimers apply. hi all, just thought this information might interest a few of you: in germany, it is perfectly legal to lend cds. you can go to a cd rental store anywhere and take them home to burn your own. and yes, I've found many a great idm release (including every full-length autechre ever put out) in these stores. costs about $2 for 24 hours. I've often wondered about the legal background of this myself. cheers, --tom

It may well be legal to rent CDs, but this does not necessarily imply the legality of _copying_ said CDs... 3

I don't know how good library services are in different countries, but at least in Finland, in the Helsinki metropolitan area you can get all AFX, Autechre, Future Sound of London, Sahko, etc. full-lengths from your local library. In general, I've repeatedly been impressed by their collection of IDMish and ambient material. If they don't have it in that specific library, they'll get it for you in a reasonably short amount of time. And the best thing about this is that it's absolutely free. Of course, this has nothing to do with the legal issue what the original mail was about, since they pay _a lot_ (like ~$100 including all the copyright costs) for each CD.

Yes it is true that it is legal to lend a cd for 24 hours in germany but copying those cds is NOT legal and violates the copyright law! On Fri, 31 Oct 1997, Tom Tonger wrote:

let's stop this f*king thread already. of course copying cds is legal as long it's for private purposes and you don't do it for money. this applies to germany as well as the US. why do you think the "especially for audio recording" CDRs are twice as expensive? because part of what you pay for them goes directly to GEMA in germany. of course, no-one buys these suckers, but that's a different story. also, you can rent them not only for 24 hrs, but for days and weeks if you want. --tom On Sat, 1 Nov 1997, MARC WANGENHEIM wrote:
