Well, I'm kind of inclined to agree with this idea, though possibly for
different reasons. Whether it is a conscious decision or not, as soon as
you beging to depend on something for a living, your integrity becomes
compromised. I used to love programming, and I did it for a hobby, but
now that I do it for a living there is no love involved at all- I could
just as well be doing an accounting job, really.
This is sort of the same thing with music- as soon as I start getting paid
for music, I notice that I'm a little more wary of doing anything "crazy,"
even though this is a subconscious thing. As soon as I catch myself
thinking like this, I slap myself silly and get twice as crazy as I had
originally planned, but I'm not so sure that most people would do this.
It is really a gradual process for most bands, but people, in general,
compromise their artistic integrity in order to get paid.
