re: the recent discussion of the newnew mouse on mars album, _instrumentals_: i was not much of a mouse on mars fan but for a few tracks here and there on each of their albums and the tune "maus mobile," off of one of the TEX volumes (and then they're wonderful remix of schlammpeitziger, released last year)...however, when i heard "subnubus," on the _folds and rhizomes for gilles deleuze_ compilation (on sub rosa), things changed. mind, i didn't then go back and start loving their other stuff--i could appreciate it more, since i'd grocked some of the group's musical ideas rendered in a style more appreciable by me, but that didn't change the basic fact that much of it was still too overtly "dancey." rather, i wanted a _whole album_ of music done in the style of "subnubus," all abstract and vauge and distant, but at the same time quite intricate and complex. the sort of record that responds to how much attention i want to give it by being enjoyable at any of a range of levels simultaneously (some of the mego records also do this for me, as does the orb, tetsu inoue, freeform's _heterarchy_, and anthony manning's _chromium nebulae_). _autoditacker_ was not that album (although it has some pretty amazing moments); _instrumentals_ is. as if they'd heard my prayers, "subnubus" appears here (vinyl, finally!), as does the MoM remix track off of the _folds and rhizomes_ sequel, _double articulation_ (another excellent track). that makes up a third of the album, so if you already have the two previously mentioned comps you might be a bit bummed...the rest is pure joy tho, occasionally upping the tempo but mostly just murking around in same obtuse drunken electronic haze, which suits me just fine...too short, but then most albums are too long... sc

It looks like there are two MoM bands now. Mouse on Mars and Mind Over MIDI. I like 'em both. obMoMIDI: He has a really icy Detroitish track on the new beatservice comp., Arctic Circles. Frankly, I'd recommend buying the disc just for that one track, but there's so many other good tracks too including new material by Biosphere (maybe not his best track tho), Sketch and Illumination. Highly recommended. Aaron np: swishswishswish (my fan)

The questions some of you who became a bit curious about the Arctic Circle compilation may ask: Where to find out more? Where to get it? The answer to the first one is simple: http://www.beatservice.no/bs015.html Here you'll find info, some reviews (more coming up) and even soundbites for most of the tracks. Where to get it then? It is only out in Scandinavia, Germany and BenNeLux right now. It will be released in England 3. nov, and in the US possibly early 98 (maybe through Dutch Indian Trading Company, but things are not cleared yet...) You can also (naturally) get it from Beatservice Mail Order http://www.beatservice.no/bsmo.html Re Mind over MIDI: His second album "ICE Acoustik" is now finished, expect release mid jan 98. It will continue his minimalistik icy detroit style, similar to his contribution on the Arctic Circle CD, and his recent Club Craft 12" (Arctic Beats EP 2). Bye, Vidar http://www.beatservice.no

Speaking of MoM, I recall hearing that they're going to be opening for Stereolab in Chicago next month. Is there any further word on whether this is just a one-off, or are the two going to be touring together? Does anyone have a list of Stereolab tour dates? -d.w. on last: Oval - Systemisch

It's a tour; Stereolab and Mouse on Mars and High Llamas (who?) are at the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles on November 26th. In a similar vein, Spring Heel Jack (the Dn'B edition, not the Ska edition) are playing with Spiritualized and Acetone (who?) at The Palace in Hollywood on November 12th. I really hate this trend of Techno artists playing with Indie bands at conventional non-rave venues. I can't say enough good things about Sean's recent Freq lp. Deep, smooth, melodic & wonderful detroit techno. This lp will be in my top 5 for 97. -->-Lance--- p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states

Interesting : please explain. Are they one and the same band, who sometimes do different style gigs? What's their new album like - (something, something and Thirsty) - which direction to they explore?

They never *really* were - although Dots & Loops is mental candyfloss.

What's this then??? Kill the guitar? If it's not pure electronica, we don't want it? Or is that an upside down happy/sad smiley...

Very noisy distorted drum'n bass with layers of dense feedback and machine hum..... much less melody than their previous 68 million shades.... err, I really like the track called "Baby." It's very aggressive with samples of a happy baby gaggling.... I played it for my friend.... her reaction was, "I hate babies." O'well. Aaron np: lords of acid "our little secret"
