Sunday night at the troubadour, West Hollywood... Some boring trance/hardhouse dj from the uk opened and played a very linear 2 hour set. If you like that kind of stuff, it would have been ok, but no one was dancing and it was just kind of pointless. Scanner rocked the house! All he had was a little notepad mixer, a theremin, a minidisk (or it could have been dat) rolling out tracks, a small yamaha sampler, some weird pen based music thingie (looked like a pilot) and a scanner. Nice shit! Everything from lush ambient pads to fucked up jungle beats. He was constantly mixing it all up, drumming beats on the sampler, changing the scanner channel, making the theremin do it's thing and drawing on the pad thing. He played for an hour and it was very entertaining. Everyone really got into it. The whole voyeurism thing, with a few hundred people listening to peoples intimate phone calls was cool. Most people there were surprised when I told them they were all live calls. Some people are just dense I guess...scanner, get it? Most people didn't. And then came that sublime piece of shit, dj spooky. The first and what should have been last time I saw Dj Spooky was a little under a year ago. How quickly we forget! I should have been prepared for what I saw again tonight. He walked on stage, tossed down two records and just started doing WACK ASS shit over the top of scanner's last song! Thanks a lot paul... Frantic offbeat cutting and weak scratching, with no apparent logic or skill. After 5 minutes, I really wanted to go up on the stage and kick the shit out of him. He's the worst fucking excuse for a dj on the planet. I understand what he's trying to do, deconstructing beats and all that bullshit, but it doesn't make the crap he was doing on stage sound any better. It's just jacking off in public as far as I'm concerned. I do stuff like that at home where no one can see (or hear) me... After 10 minutes I was looking for my friends to tell them I was going to walk home...Every minute I stayed I got more and more pissed off at the aural bullshit I was being subjected to. At this point, I was having flashbacks to the alec empire show at the same venue. But even that didn't hold a candle compared to what was happening this time. After 20 minutes, I found my friends talking to Robin (aka Scanner). I told him I loved his bit and that I was getting the fuck out of there as quick as I could. Just then, dj spooky grabbed the mic and said that he'd like Robin to come back on stage and do a little duet with him. We all said bye to the scanman and ran out the door as fast as we could. I would have loved to hear Scanner again, but the thought of that dickhead, slicing, dicing and scratching (quite lamely I might add) over the top of Robin's music didn't make it even remotely possible. I can't tell you all what an insult it was to hear Paul Miller up there on the turntables. BULLSHIT, that's what it was. Fuck that guy... peace out, brock. ps. Sorry for the strong language, but if you can't take it, go see dj spooky, then you'll understand!

Poor Dj Spooky.. I actually bought one of his strange suppossably Ambient Hip-Hop albums "Viral Sonata". It sucked quite much, but as I was sitting there listing, and bored, I took out the small leaf book inside and read a bit of his philisophical insite. Then I felt kinda sorry for the guy. From his writing I can tell he's really trying, but it just doesn't come out that way. I don't really like to bash people who are giving it all they got, even though it may not turn out to be too wonderful. I don't really know what this has to do with IDM, so sorry for the waste of bandwidth.

So Brock, how do you REALLY feel about Spooky? I'll speak for myself and say I really appreciate what he's doing.in an age where 99% of the DJ's sound like they're playing the same freaking song for an hour and a half, at least there's someone who's not afraid to take chances and expand on the genre of "dance music". What you have to understand is that he comes from the dub-school, where atmosphere and dynamics is more important than anal-boy technique worship. Last but not least, if he's so wack, why is he on tour with Scanner, and you're not?

i remembered the last time i heard him spin (from the lobby of the venue with my ears plugged) well enough to previously plan my escape to commence as soon as scanner was over. when spooky began, i felt the urge to see if he really was as bad as i remembered, because it seemed unbelievable... and sure enough. i think my equalibrium was thrown off, because i had trouble finding the exit, and got stuck going around the bar in the wrong direction, which foiled my quick-escape route - but, i managed to trample my way out quickly after. as soon as my car was delivered to me, i popped in a tape as fast as possible to calm the erratic brainwaves. while i was waiting for my car, i noticed a spooky poster that bosted something about him being an electronica renaissance man, or something.. Nah, that was the guy who played before scanner, Paul Needham. He played 4 to the floor trance (and house) for 2 hours...We were board stiff, as was everyone else in the place, but we didn't leave. When dj spooky went on, we fucking ran for the door.
quoted 2 lines ...at least there's someone who's not afraid to take> ...at least there's someone who's not afraid to take > chances and expand on the genre of "dance music".
Don't give me shit about being 'afraid to take chances and expand on the genre of 'dance music''. I'm one of the few people in LA with the nuts (and the freedom) to do that. I have a fine appreciation of most all forms of electronic music (except diva house). My sets cross as many or more styles then that sublime shit ball spooky, including jazz (surprise, surprise). Plus I know how to scratch (and I'm not talking about jiggling the record out of time with the cross fader in the middle).
quoted 3 lines What you have to understand is that he comes from the dub-school,> What you have to understand is that he comes from the dub-school, > where atmosphere and dynamics is more important than anal-boy > technique worship.
Bullshit. Dub has a certain flow to it. Paul has no fucking idea about flow. He's spastic. How can you call cross cutting jungle with jazz, off beat and not beatmatch, anything but lame. The rats that live in my wall could do that. A fucking deaf person could do that. Scratching Public Enemy out of time with the Alfred Hitchcock theme song spinning backwards isn't a real hard one either. I could have done the same things that he did, with my hands tied behind my back, blindfolded and a motorcycle helmet on my head. But I wouldn't, because I have respect for the people who are listening to the music. He had none. He was just having a wank in public and calling it 'art'. I'm not a big 'anal-boy technique worship' kind of guy...If the music is good, I'm not going to bitch about the skills. But you can't even hear the music, because this guy is acting like such a fucking maestro on the decks. He never had two records in time for more then 2 beats. Another dj came up to me in the first 5 minutes of his set and asked why we wasted our time learning how to mix two records. He said it obviously didn't matter. He was joking of course...
quoted 2 lines Last but not least, if he's so wack, why is he on tour with Scanner, and> Last but not least, if he's so wack, why is he on tour with Scanner, and > you're not?
Because he's a bullshit artist. Just the same as any art school kid who craps on a canvas and convinces all his friends it's 'art'. Think about that one... brock. ps. I guess you didn't read my IDM review of alec empire djing a while back.

Anything like Otomo Yoshihide, _The Night Before the Death of the Sampling Virus_ (on Extreme)? Japanese newscasts, various soundbites, boiled LPs skipping and bouncing the needle all over the place... You are also encouraged to use and abuse the disc any way you like. I would wind some sewing thread around the disc, and adjust as necessary until it would skip, stick and jump the right amount. I don't know much about DJ Spooky, but it occurs to me his intentions may (MAY) be along these lines. Or if not his intentions, the end result. Likely not that far off in left field, though, if DJ Spooky is considered part of the dance scene. --Mark __ <http://www.xnet.com/~mkolmar/BurningRome> < MPEG & RA audio clips > Forthcoming CD SENSELESS on Mindfield Records MINDCD03 Cathartium 14 m u s i c : w e b : s o u n d d e s i g n : h t m l : c g i : e t c "Computers are bringing about a situation that's like the invention of harmony.
