To whomever may help, In the past year or so I have discovered how much creativity can go into electronic music and am interested in finding out how you get into this line of music. I know music is a hard buisness in any case, and I'm not looking for a lecture. I'm well aware of how difficult it is. but whatever the case, I'm not really sure how to even start. I'm starting by going to school for a degree in recording. Any help would be appreciated. Sorry if I'm offending any purists out there who might be offended by this stupid rookie who thinks he can just waltz right into a music career. Everyone has to start somewhere right? well, I just want to know where to start.

Figure out what type of "Electronic" music you want to do. You can try out several music types and do what you do best. Get some equipment. Download Fast Tracker for your computer, its free!!!! Good luck. -Chris Join the Reggae, Ska, Dub & Dancehall mailing list! Send: Join Reggae <your@email> to chrisone@mnl.sequel.net

Sage words of advice from Skint/UD recording artist REQ: don't wait until you have the perfect conditions before you start creating - it is the ultimate laziness to put things off to the future - find some way of doing it now or you will never start. following this, don't wait for the latest synth/mac update - start now with whatever you have at hand. now is the time for creation, not the future. it is important to remember that moments of error are only judged so by you because they don't fit with a pre-determined plan. loose off the reins and create a balance between good and bad. the moment of creating is yours - the end result is an ornament or diary entry and can be given away.

So ... were you wanting to make music, sell music, start a label, be a dj, be a producer or none of the above? markw@southwind.net

my advice? Read "the Manual:How to have a number one the easy way" by The Timelords aka The KLF. Its weird, very funny and explains a lot, hehehe. Well I never got a no.1 but all the stuff I got on a cd until now was based on the "golden rules" so... ;))) Anyway, U can find it online... check ftp://jumper.mcc.ac.uk/pub/ttl/KLF/Misc/the-manual.txt And as for "what to do" actually... ie "should I make a record or what"? Well my answer it do what U really feel like doing and do it naturally. I mean: do not waste time and money in a studio if ya dont have any ideas on how the machines work. Don't buy an expensive pc if ya cant even make 4 tracks mod tunes on the crappy pc U have. Try doing something with the few gear U have (if you have any! ;)) I did my first stuff about 10 yrs ago on a double cassette recorder. I used the "pause" to create ugly cut-up tapes. Then I evolved into using 3 cassette recorders liked with a crappy cable taken from a pocket Sharp computer. I also experimented using sounds from a Commodore 64. Then I added a crappy keyboard that looked like a toy. Then a mixer, that allowed me to use also a turntable and later the cd player. Later I bought a 486 pc and made the first pc stuff in WAV format using only the software provided by Creative Labs with the SB16 card. Ah, I used (and still use) the same crappy Sharp cable to link my soundcard to a sound source. :) Then I switched to Fasttracker and XM format. Soon I will buy a new pc with a decent soundcard and a decent processor too. And a burner or a minidisc, maybe. But all this and other less important passages happened gradually. :) bye, Nicola (Dj Batman) Battista *1997 Now!* ...'nuff said!! 8) Modra Stjerne Homepage http://www.metro.it/nezmar/modrastjerne/
