divine proportion and the golden section are basically the same mathematical concept. they go along the same lines as the golden spiral. it's also called the golden mean. i can't remember exactly what the hell it is though. the concept was used alot in ancient greek sculpture and architecture (supposedly made things more pleasing to the eye). anyway, with whatever points i've scored, maybe someone can inform me as to whether or not an aphex twin release exists entitled "jam roly poly". i saw it listed on some small on-line cd store and was wondering if maybe they just fucked up or i'm really missing something... thanks -marc-

the "divine proportion" is also known as the Phi ratio and is approximated at 1.6180339. this number is refered to as a "transcendental number" as it never repeats itself. the Phi ratio is a proportion...if you have a square (which itself has all sorts meaning) and then draw a line down its middle giving you two equal sections with A as the width of the left section. draw a diagonal in the right section B. A+B=C...A/B=B/C=1.6180339. rotating the diagonal line B untill it is at 180 degrees giving you line C (A+B=C) will give you the "golden mean rectangle". if you take the shortest edge and make a square you then have another rectangle proportional to the bigger one by 1.618 creating a spiral that goes in and out infinitly. the bone structure of organic life is based on this ratio...the first bone in the finger is in Phi ratio to the second as is the second to the third etc...same for the feet and legs. the greeks werent quite all that and it was medievil man by the name of leonardo fibonicci who improved upon this by observing plant life and the sequences they utilize to grow. the "fibonicci spiral" which is derived from the "golden spiral" is the same logarithmic spiral that the pryamids on the giza plateau are layed out in...as are the "martian monuments". there are also correlations amongst the chakra system, the 8 note musical scale, and the fibonicci spiral.

The Golden Section is the division where the proportion of the larger piece to the whole is the same as the proportion of the smaller piece to the larger piece. About 61.8%. --Mark __ <http://www.xnet.com/~mkolmar/BurningRome> ==> MPEG audio clips <== m u s i c : w e b : s o u n d d e s i g n : h t m l : c g i : e t c "We invented machines in order to reduce our work. beginning to sound formulaic...i mean, how many extended space jams with eastern inflections can one take? its starting to lose its appeal, to me at least.... tom w np: system 7 - golden section ( the only allusion i can find relates to boredom)

A little late..... Everyone answered for bonus points, so I'll just take on the standard part. Listening to golden section now. Track breakdown: 1. Rite of Spring 8:55 2. Don Corleone 8:35 3. Y2K (Beatnik Mix) 5:13 4. Ring of Fire 9:49 5. Exdreamist 7:30 6. Wave Bender 6:36 7. Sino X Files 7:55 8. Merkaba! 9:48 9. Y2K (Back to the Future) 6:26 10. Borobudur 7:36 Definitely worth picking up. Killer beats, audiophile acceptable sounds. Lots of Balinese and Japanese vocals throughout. The Don Corleone track has some excellent Don Cherry Trumpet samples, as well.
