reading stuff about live shows..the last i went to was tribal gathering... gus gus did a great show...lots of nicely distorted beats, and the show had humour too, one of the main guys coming on stage like a maniac guitar weilding guy,but it was all done well and was meant to be funny..(i hope)..tongue in cheek...the music was very good, the sounds was good and the show lasted for a while ...they were one o the highpoints for me....kraftwerk gave a good show..everyone knew what to expect and they didnt let us down at all..the even came on at the end in luminous stripy suits and played a new track...its was the best concert ive been to..atmosphere,music..and i think everyone resepcted kraftwerk for what theyve done...it looked like they themselves were enjoying it as well.. i wasnt too impressed with orbital, the sounds was very echoey, and coming on after kraftwerk..well they couldnt relly compete(but r ussually good) maybe another topic for ranting on....why do djs get so much credit when most of em play other peoples songs...djs in the uk,like pete tong..still play the same stale house/garage music but r making pots of cash doing it...id much prefer to hear stuff like blackdog/b12/autechre/global comm/ etc on the radio...but this tends to get played on late night shows,or john peel plays the odd techno/electronic tune like some autechre remixes now and again...i heard him play come to daddy, but it sounded like random garbage to me(i like most of aphex stuff, but hes not withought the odd rubbish tune!!!!) well, some comments from me...go and see gus gus if u can,and the new bjork stuff sounds promising too(thanks to lfo) wayne.

On one level, a DJ has his place and should be paid for what he does if he does a good job - ie rocks a party or creates a mood, by yes, playing other people's records. It is one of the basic methods of distributing awarenes of dance music, and it works. (and - it's a tenuous parallel but I think of some use - no-one would normally level any criticism at a symphony orchestra for playing "other people's compositions" would they?) I don't see anything inherently wrong with this, so long as it doesn't get out of hand (which of course it does, but that's another story) DJs like Pete Tong get paid pots of cash for playing stale house music because its commercial and lots of people like it, so lots of people will pay to hear it, it's as simple as that. It's the same basic reason that Michael Jackson makes a lot more money than Aphex Twin. You and I (and most on idm) are destined to a life where the stuff we would prefer to hear is sidelined to the situation you outline below.

My solution (I have the option, due to a comfortable income) is just to buy everything I want to hear, and largely ignore the radio - years of experience having taught me that its not worth wasting hours or days of listening time waiting for the odd thing which does come up. Yes I miss some good stuff, but on balance I'm happier (if poorer) J ^ np: Dan Curtin - the web of life (it's nice having someone else's record collection to listen to as well) Steady J aka James Skilton steady-j@geocities.com Autechre & SKAM discogs @ http://subnet.virtual-pc.com/~sk393820

I am so amazed that most of my friends who are disillusioned about the radio have not turned to this alternative. I stopped listening to commerical radio 4 years ago + I've felt cleaner ever since. g.

So true : some bastard snapped off my car radio aerial a couple of weeks back and I haven't bothered replacing it - the situation has forced me to mix some creative tapes on a more regular basis (since I spend much time driving and want some decent music) I've actually never been happier with the aural stimulation. I have full control over the choice of music to suit my mood, rather than wait for a million ads to run before a megalo DJ waffles for hours about nothing and then plays some Top 20 crap. Yet again. I * np: mike p's funky pipecleaner... great title :-)
