Reviews have been written, but i thought I'd throw in 2 cents. The Sneaker
Pimps should never leave the studio--her voice just doesn't cut it live, and
hearing them for 45 minutes made me realize how lightweight their music
really is compared to Tricky or Portishead. The Crystal Method should be put
up against a wall and shot. Every track was built around a cheeso voice
sample, bad percussion sounds, and annoying other sounds, plus the guys
looked like fools pounding their poor keyboards and jumping around. Daft
punk was fun, if overly simple, 4/4, repetitive... Still, robotic and funky.
Why the audience cheered for their version of mixing, I'll never know, but
they are worth seeing. Fluke is cheesy shit, much too midrange, the sound
was muddy, but they didn't have bass or high-end in their music. Death in
Vegas started off slow and dubby and nice, then got progressively faster,
more whomping, and began to sound like the Crystal Method (ugh). Aphex was
great. A real assualtive set, which scared all the ravers away, leaving me
and pacman and a whole host of aphex obsessives (which I am not, way too
expensive). Funny sidenote--I went downstairs, and was greeted by a dj who
only had 5 records to spin. They really should have planned this thing
better.
Last night, I saw We and the X-men (x-ecutioners) live. Wow. I had seen We
play a really mellow set in the past, which was quite boring, but they ripped
it up last night. Opened with a LOUD version of Magnesium flares, played a
few album tracks, then went off into dub, jungle, and assorted other stuff,
which got mellower later. Once again, ravers got scared away, but it was
really "IDM"-both listenable and danceable.
The X-ecutioners were amazing too. If you haven't seen really good scratch
djs, go the next time one comes to town, get close to the stage, and prepare
yourself. Two disappointments tho'-Cut Chemist didn't show, and
Wally+Swingsett weren't able to play. Has anyone heard their album or
Wally's solo work? reviews?
