Anyone heard the record 'Traceroute' by USBS. I read the liner notes in the store today. It seems that a couple of Swedish characters have recorded a bunch of network traffic and converted it into soundfiles. What's it sound like? Yes, I checked this one out last month. I usually love everything that Ash International does and I also work with networks & internet connect every day so those types of 'semi-organised noise bursts' are familiar to me. But the sounds represented on Traceroute come across as harsh grating seemingly random bursts of white noise that was interesting for a fleeting few seconds and painful to listen to for the remainder of the album. Maybe I just havent given the release enough time to sink in but if first impressions say anything, mine say 'approach this release with caution.' -->-Lance--- lance@inaudible.com p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

That's pretty much the way I imagined it would sound, actually :) There's something to be said for pure systems music as a starting point, but what's more interesting to me is when the systems music is used a just a starting point. Whether this means refinement through processing, setting up a more specific system so the output is aesthetically please, whatever, just don't give me the raw shit unless it's magically excellent. I guess Oval is sort of a decent example of this - their stuff is based on some seemingly simple systems (skipping CDs), but it's been refined way past just clicks & skips. Unfortunately the Traceroute lp sounds completely raw. The electronic data-noise isnt just a starting point, it is the only sound/noise on this album. Keep in mind i'm a big fan of wildly experimental music but this was just too much for even my ears to take. Brash noise with a capital oi. -->-Lance--- lance@inaudible.com p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
