Last night I was watching a program on BBC1 about various interesting stories that had been on Tomorrows World over the years. One section of the program gave a few clips of articles that had been on the news in 1969 and one of the clips was footage of Paul McCartney getting married. In this clip there were loads of daft women crying outside the church the ceremony had been held at and a reporter was there asking them why they were crying: Reporter: "Why are you girls crying?" Girls: "Shutup" Reporter: "Tell me why you're crying." Girls: "Oh shutup!" It was mad. That sample's used in one of the last tracks of disc 1 of Last Train To Lhasa, track 6 or 7 I think. It's strange hearing a something on the TV that's been sampled on one of your discs. Like that sample on A Collection of Short Stories from the Abyss.

Wild. I always wondered about the origins of that sample. In fact, I was listening to this track yesterday, having dusted off a long-unlistened copy of "Lhasa". The Kitaro-esque melodies combined with that Led Zep beat (there it is again!) create a delerious effect. The bit about Mr. Potatohead as cosmonaut doesn't really seem to work, though, does it? 3

Have to say that I'm for ever spotting samples and love it when I do. Couple from FSOL that I remember spotting were the one from Aliens that use at the start of Far Out Son Of Lung and one from Scanners they used in Lifeforms (the one with the water sounds as background, think he's saying "they're drowning me""I think I'm a little bit afraid"). Tim, who also enjoys spotting samples. Those who set out to serve both God and Mammon soon find there is no God. On Thu, 14 Aug 1997, Higton, Steve (IT Brk.) wrote:

What I'd like to see is a webpage devoted to spotting every sample from THX1138 used in an IDM track. Some examples: "If you feel you are not properly sedated..." - TPower - Police State "What's wrong?" - Orbital - track towards end of InSides "Move along" - Chaos & Julia Set - Natural High "Try 621" - Reload - 621? These are just off the top of my head. Reload has some other THX samples, and early Richie Hawtin has gobs of them. Believe me, there are many, many more. Che

Just to be the anal sample guy, I believe the earliest use of THX sample dates to Front 242, with their album Geography circa 1982/83. They use the 'What's wrong?' sample. Actually been digging up my old front 242 albums and giving them a spin. I love'em. Since my 'entrance' into IDM few years back, I now listen to records like Geography and Back Catalog in a whole new light. If I didn't know any beter I would having a hard time differentiating between this old stuff and some of the Skam and Rephlex releases recently... ah the 80's... It's the bit where the psychologist guy has a whole load of people come and see the scanner guy, whom they've just managed to rescue from the bad scanners. He's sitting on a bed in the next room from these poeple and his hearing all their thoughts.
