and Franz added: e> I heard this was a real goodie... ;) Now that you mention it. I've been awfully negligent about reviewing or hyping things lately. Anyways. I got this tape too, and also I lucky enough to have one with the added bonus track 'fuzzy knight'. According to the inlay 'Aircheck' is Plod's second demo cassette, their first one 'Pni' was released under their a.k.a. LhIX. I've played the tape many times now, which is unusual for me as playing tapes is not one of my favourite passtimes. The opening number 'Aircheck' immediately captivated my attention. Analogue sounds, beats and tears ... I LOVE it. A bit distorted here and there but then I'm no sound purist. (one of my fav indie guitarbands 'Flying Saucer Attack' are meant to be recorded over the top) The second track '<-L' is definitely my favourite. It's supposed to be a tribute to an old boyroomcompanion (Commodore C-64), but to me it sounds like it should have been dedicated to early morning bathroom rituals. The synth first sounds like someone brushing his teeth, this effect being confirmed by a sample of one of those hot air things to dry your hands with in public conveniences. Nice catchy melodies, dry, dry beats ... the giggles. I'm ready to face the world once again. Taiga's opening sounds make me go 'oh wow' .... a feeling remeniscent of the feeling I got when first listening to JEGA. (Had to get that one in again) Anyways. I'm not doing a track by track review. I get distracted by the music playing anyhow. The melodies are good, the acid sounds take me away, but mostly the beats are doing it for me. Always different, some dry and harsh, some really fat, and then the mu-ziq style tearing squelchy ones ... (squelching seems very fitting for a group named Plod). Enough. I want to listen to the music again. You all should! Just get eggschell@ts.umu.se to send you a demo, so you can hear for yourself why this tape has me in it's grip. Hey, *extremely* lucky! Only ten copies have the extra track. They come in blue cover as opposed to the usual yellow one.

That's true, they had to change their name because it was already in use. Their first demo is pretty similar to their second.

Actually, it's supposed to be a sewing machine.

Yes. It's actually very nice, more ambientish and less funky than their previous output ("Aircheck" and "Pni" demo tapes). My favoutite tracks are "Choutette" and "Dilly-builder", they are the kind of songs that will make you feel glad when you're in a bad mood. On the whole it is a very glad demo with flowers on the cover and all. Their most original work so far I suppose. It's hard to point out anything concrete that hasn't been done before, but if you think more about it then the song structures are pretty original since they don't just base everything on loops like many contemporary IDM artists do. Check out the upcoming interview with Plod on Radio Edit if you can. (I guess only one of you can. :)) Any other comments on it? I know there are several people that have it... Oh, if you want the tape then it's available for free-ish from eggshell@ts.umu.se or plod@ts.umu.se, if there are any copies left. Oh yeah it's really fucking good, I've been listening to it quite alot in my car. Really nice stuff, as good as anything I've been listening too. Skam should be calling you two geezers any day now :) And don't be so modest Johan, that Mr. Blip and Mr. Blop tape is sounding really good as well. You IDM musicians are a pretty sorted lot. This sure is one great tape. Listen to it once and think "Hey, I've heard this before". Listen to it twice and think "Hey, this is not bad". Listen to it five times and think "Wow, this is really good stuff". Then make a tape full of only Dilly Builder and put it on auto reverse :) This sure is a tape I would like to have on CD. The ambient parts coexists nicely with the rhythmic parts. The symbiosis is wonderful. This band is going to be big.

Make another tape full of only Harmony of Machines and put that on auto reverse as well. (No, not at the same time! :) Words are not enough to describe neither that song nor Ormulum. I've never heard 'Pni', but I've got Aircheck (which I reviewed some time ago). Aircheck sort of grabbed me straight away, but I took some time to get into 'Backgammon'. I don't know exactly why exactly. JJ> My favoutite tracks are "Choutette" and JJ> "Dilly-builder", they are the kind of songs that will JJ> make you feel glad when you're in a bad mood. I have to add myself to the people who have given positive reviews of O' Boy by Plod, it really is a delicious cd, those who would like to live in a world of lush Selected Ambient Works 1-style music can't go wrong here. The five tracks can just be stuck on repeat, both relaxing and engaging at the same time. There is a real development of tracks and a B12/Black Dog method of both building and twisting the melodies used. Often reminds me of the emotional qualities of Cylob but without such abrasiveness. Ae and Aphex influences are certainly here although Plod are maturing and developing a style of their own which I will be keen to watch out for in the future. Dilly Builder, from their last tape (Backgammon) was one of my favourite tracks of last year and this ep/album continues at that level and gets even better. What I particularly like about this music is that it is so damn listenable, Its almost as if Plod are saying that weve gone beyond experimentalis and want to come back to making music we can really listen and engage with. If you dont own a copy try and beg, borrow or steal one - when these guys get a contract you'll be wishing you had one of their early and very rare discs! wp: Plod - O'Boy (twice in one night, whats wrong with me?)

There are two Plod six-track cassette-only releases called Back Gammon and Aircheck as well as one cdr ep called O'Boy. As you know Plod also appear on the Worm Interface Alt.Frequencies3 comp and are scheduled to release an album in the near future on the same label. Hello IDMers, I was glad to get beautiful present on my birthday - (may be) the best album of year 2000 - Plod "Pillow Talk". It's a wonderful music filled with warm and grief. (Worm Interface label must be renamed to Warm Interface ;) I don't like a comparison of music, but for those people who like: some influence Autechre "Incunabula" is present. And I think it's very good. ;) Roman NP: Plod "om man blas dom i nosa sa nys dom" (my favorite track!) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
