what a pisser. Some of us would LOVE to learn how to spin and collect massive amounts of records. I personally, can't afford to purchase a set of 1200's because I'm trying to save up for a sampler. It's tough to be torn between hearing the music you love and wanting to create the music you hear in your head. Someday however, when I'm rich and famous....or maybe just famous...or maybe quasi-known on the IDM list, I'll be able to afford everything I want. All Ihave to do is click my heels twice and slowly repeat: "i wish i had some decks, i wish i had some decks"..... _________________________________________________ Brian Rachielles- UC Santa Barbara (.b) Production Director KCSB fm 91.9 1997-98 Audio Program thurs 2-4am ambient-idm-noise web- http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Club/4980

Well, unlike the other person who replied to this thread, I can afford a turntable...I simply don't want one. Not that I feel as though I have to justify myself, but I got really tired of taping the really good things (of which there were a lot) from vinyl just so I could listen to it in my car and for my walkman. It just became too much of an effort and I don't have that much time anymore. So, aside from the comments like this one, anyone know of anything Gescom-related on CD? Thanks, Chad

If you don't have the time that's understandable. What's cool now though, is that you can put your vinyl not available on CD and burn it on a CD very easily. There are programs that even clean up the sound for you and take out surface noise and pops with the click of a button. Adaptec EZ CD 3.0 has it built into the program expressly for the purpose of transferring vinyl to CD. TDK blank CD's are $3.50 each now-about as cheap as a tape! There is so much great music that is not available on CD and may never be. Not just new IDM 12"s but thousands of older independent releases and some just plain weird and wonderful records that were vinyl only and will likely stay that way. I have hundreds of great records that I would be missing out on without a turntable. A turntable is an absolute must for me. Btw I have an SL1200-MKII and I'm not a DJ. It's a nice table. As for degradation of sound on vinyl records, I have records that are 20-30 years old and sound great. CD's may not last this long. We'll see I guess.... =)

Cool! All I need now is a turntable (for that purist analogue sound!) and then I can transfer that to a digital medium with a cd-recorder! That will only set me back about a $1000! Doesn't this defeat the whole purpose of vinyl? Oh fuck it, I'll just listen to my cds ... and may the war continue ... I'm not taking all this too seriously, so don't bother flaming me ... markw@southwind.net

Oh fuck it, you're right...what was I thinking? Anyone want to buy a couple thousand records cheap? Contact me privately. =) $1000? Umm..you can get a CDR for $300-the price of a decent cassette deck. Good quality turntables can be found used at very good prices as others have pointed out. Transferring to CD defeats the purpose? Of what? Being able to listen to a vinyl-only release on your portable or car CD player, or at work? Or being able to give a friend a copy of a great vinyl release that's impossible to find in *any* format? Sure there are lots of people that are happy with whatever they can find on CD and that's fine. Some of us are a little more adventerous though. Oh, don't bother flaming me as I'm not taking this seriously either......see the ----> =) Heh.

i'm selling a 2x CD recorder for $300. (cos i'm upgrading to an even better one.) blanks are $3.00 or less if you know where to look. np: CD-R i made of a bunch of new vinyl i picked up... (couple of skint 12"s, something called "funkopath" which is an andy guthrie thing (he's worked with banco de gaia and eat static), an electron industries doublepack 10") -- Jon Drukman jsd@gamespot.com SpotMedia Communications ...I was an infinitely hot and dense dot...

Is this a really good program? I'm considering getting the add on to SoundForge that will take out the pops. Does anyone have it? Any experience with it? Rusty
