Amen to the =Dark Magus= recommendation, and add =Live-Evil= and =Black Beauty= to the list (available in the U.S. for the first time). =Live-Evil= is one of my favorite Miles albums ever, with funky, groove-oriented elements like on =Tribute to Jack Johnson= (my definite favorite) and more freeform passages, similar to =Bitches Brew= and =Filles de Kilimanjaro.= Excellent albums all... ----------- John Bush...

And also _In Concert_ and _At The Fillmore_. I spent $45 on all these (2CD sets) a long time ago, but they've been *well* worth it and it's a hell of a lot more intelligent than some of the shit that's been discussed here recently. :-) cya brian

Happy to see this topic! The problem with the price of $45 for 2CD set is that it's available on Japanese import only, and that's all because of the American major label holding up what they have in their vault. Miles himself was complaning about CBS/Columbia's no actions toward other materials. They have tons in their vault. In any case, "Agarta" and "Pangea" both recorded live in Japan in 1976(?) are also funky and groove oriented, even ambient in a way. A studio recording collection called "Big Fun" is really cool to the ears of IDMers. Repetitive yet evolving, sponteneous and progressive. Miles was always saying positive things to people who grooved and danced in his shows, rather than snobbish jazz-know-it-alls. - wolf -

No, the real problem is people who chime in on a thread they haven't been paying attention to. Sony US finally released 'Dark Magus,' 'In Concert,' and 'Live Evil' on CD earlier this week. As long as we're talking Miles Davis: To anyone who doesn't already have _Bitches Brew_, _Pangaea_, and _Agharta_, I'd suggest you try those 3 (in about that order) before moving on to other titles in Davis' "fusion" period. _Tribute to Jack Johnson_ is often overlooked, and also an extraordinary piece of work -- might be a good start since it's a single, studio disc (better sound than the live _Pangaea_ and _Agharta_, and less expensive). But _Bitches Brew_ is essential. Having said that, _Live-Evil_ and _Dark Magus_ are ace as well. _In a Silent Way_ (from just before the seminal _Bitches Brew_) is compelling "ambient" that's well worth checking into. (Your local library may have some of these, btw...) _Black Beauty_ and _At the Fillmore_ are a notch down for me. I haven't heard many good things about _In Concert_ (c.'72). All-Music Guide just about says it's worthless (wanky, self-indulgent and not well-executed... basically a document of an off-night). Haven't heard it myself though. I'd like to see _Big Fun_ issued in the U.S. so I can avoid paying the price of the Japanese imports as I did for several others. --Mark Kolmar

Much agreed! Jack Johnson is my fave too. Let's hope they rerelease Get Up With It as well. Actually, anyone who likes this era of Miles should pick up the Neon 12" that came out on Ntone a little while back. It's Rhys Chatham (who did noize guitar stuff at the same time as Glenn Branca back in the early 80s) & Martin Wheeler. Chatham plays a trumpet through some massive distortion over Wheeler's beats-- which aren't the greatest but Chatham's playing more than makes up for it. Howie
