If you can find it, snap up Electronic Rainbow. He took all his early singles, chopped them up (physically chopped up the tape, apparently) and randomly put them back together into 72 minutes of uber-Merzbow. In random bursts, you'll get everything from the sound the wiring in your house would make to the sound of your speakers blowing out (but they're not.) This piece is absolutely essential, and I would love to find it somewhere (my taped copy walked away one day.) Is this not Rainbow Electronics? I've got this CD and it is I think as you describe. It's a collection of works previously released but re-ordered for the album. Very intense, relentless and unemotional exploration into noise. -Ed np: Tortoise remixed by Markus Popp

nothing at all idm about merzbow... but im sure there are plenty of adventurers who listen to this fierceness on idm. ive only heard about 6 albums i loved 50% and couldnt be arsed with the other, ive got a collaboration with John Waterman called Tokyo interchange which i really like..... if you like noise and live in london you should come along to the mu thing at the bluenote... ill make sure some merzbow and ash international madness gets an airing :) /k/./F/

Has anyone mentioned the Autechre mix on the Merzbow remix CD, _Scumtron_ (Blast First)? Also contains a Panasonic remix.

That's a pretty good one (it's Brisbane Tokyo Interlace, though). A few titles I'd suggest: Music for Bondage Performance 2 (Extreme) -- extensive use of loops may generate more appeal for idm fans, but this has got to be one of his strongest discs anyway. Much of it resembles the 1st track from Music for Bondage Performance (Extreme), below. Rainbow Electronics 2 (Dexter's Cigar) -- not as harsh as most titles in the last few years, this is deep, highly abstract ambience which runs through numerous permutations. Originally from 1990, I understand this was to be the 2nd disc of the now-unavailable Rainbow Electronics (Alchemy, Jap.) Music for Bondage Performance (Extreme)-- mostly very subdued compared to other releases, the disc has an incredibly dark, erotic sound. Much use of bowed metal and similar sounds. Venereology (Relapse) -- Among the harshest, most brutal, intimidating discs in his catalog. Getting hard to find, though. Pulse Demon (Relapse) is similar but makes more use of "woodpecker"/strobe effects. Ecobondage (Distemper) -- reissue of 1986 LP, this sounds more like Nurse With Wound without the sense of humor. Autechre's remix on _Scumtron_ derives from this material, but the structure is radically different. There is plenty more. If you get beyond the surface similarities from one title to another, and dig deeply into the differences, you find there is actually a kaleidoscopic range of colors and textures. It helps me clear my head -- and sometimes my sinuses. --Mark
