Recordings of Shortwave Numbers Stations
frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What Are Numbers Stations?
Numbers Stations are the secret communications of
intelligence agencies such as MOSSAD, MI6, CIA,
KGB, BND, StB, and so on.
Where are Number Stations Found?
Numbers Stations are found on the Shortwave part
of the radio spectrum.
How do we know for sure that Numbers Stations
are spy communications?
One example: A man posing as an art dealer was
caught listening to the Numbers Station OLX when
the police swooped down on his hideout. He was
working for Czech intelligence, infiltrating Jewish
groups in the west. He was caught in the act of
transcribing his instructions.
What do people use to hear them?
You do not need any special equipment to listen
to numbers Stations; any standard Shortwave radio
will do.
How far do Numbers Stations reach?
Numbers Stations can be heard on every part of
the globe, 24 hours a day.
Where do Numbers Stations transmit from?
Some of the transmitters have been located by
enthusiasts with direction finding equipment
(one was 'DF'd to Warrenton Virginia), but for
the most part, transmitter locations are unknown.
What do the numbers mean?
Numbers Stations messages are encrypted (scrambled)
with a system known as a 'one time pad'. In the
one time pad 'cryptosystem' text messages are
turned into groups of numbers by adding a specially
generated random number to the 'Plaintext' or
original message. Only the people that have
the 'pad' can decipher the message. This
encryption method cannot be broken.
Why do the Stations use music to identify
themselves?
There are many questions like this, that remain
unanswered, because no government will admit to
transmitting Numbers. Its a mystery.
Do Numbers Stations interfere with Air Traffic
Control?
Yes. Numbers Stations have been known to interfere
with essential radio services like Air Traffic
Control and Shipping.
How were the recordings collected?
A message was sent out onto the Internet, asking
Shortwave listeners with tape archives to
contribute to the project. We received tapes
from all over the globe.
How long have Numbers Stations been on the air?
For at least 30 years. Early messages took the
form of strange sentences, spoken at the end
of news broadcasts. Announcers were sometimes
heard saying, 'For the benefit of our friends
overseas: Peter has painted his fence red.
I repeat, Peter has Painted his fence red'
Why has there never been a major news article
about Numbers Stations?
You tell us!
Why don't spies just pick up the telephone,
or use the Internet?
Spies cant use any form of wired communication
because a wire has two ends, and from that,
'the enemy' can know that you are receiving
communications on a regular basis. This is
known as 'Traffic Analysis' and can reveal
the activities of spies very easily since
all international calls are monitored and
all Internet traffic is word-scanned.
Social Context
The cold war is over. Defense spending is
being wound down. Spying is on the increase.
This is the contradiction that Numbers Stations
present us with. Why is it, after the fall of
the Berlin wall that the amount of Numbers
Station traffic has increased? Logically it
should have declined as everyone turns their
efforts to peace and commerce.
What is on the CD?
Over 80 different examples of Numbers Stations,
all having different voices and callups.

(Irdial home) to hear examples of Numbers Stations.
How Unique is the CD?
This CD set is absolutely unique. It is the first
time that anyone has compiled a set of Numbers
Station recordings for sale to the public.
