now, normally i'd stand back and let the chemical brothers fans waddle
around in their sad little big beat world, but when one of them makes an
attack on chicago house music which is more or less responsible for all the
music we hear now, i have to start tapping these keys....
why don't we start with the name - 'chemical brothers'. it's really an
interesting and thought provoking name isn't it? basically, from the
outset, you know with certainty that their music is for taking drugs and
drinking beer to. it's going to be loud, simple, 'heavy' and have
absolutely nothing in it that would distract the listener from having a
good old shallow laugh down the pub with all the other 'lads' (who, 95% of
the time, are students too). it's music custom designed for being a
dickhead to. no thought required, just let that big bold beat wash over
you, while your mind endlessly cycles through car-chase,
scarface-style-shootout and snow-boarding scenarios. it's so ridiculously
bland and forgettable that it is the perfect soundtrack to 90's 'youth' tv
adverts - something loud and noisy always makes the average cretin sit up
and take notice, at which point they are about ready to buy anything
offered. yes, on the advertising front, big beat knocks even syrupy drum
and bass into a cocked hat. and if you claim that these two clever fellows
are anonymous, how come i can't get their ugly mugs out of my head? THEY
ARE EVERYWHERE, THEY ARE UTTER EGOMANIACS!
so the chems make 'psychedelic funkin music'? maybe your definition of
psychedelic is to have a sitar sample, but mine isn't. acid is an
incredible experience, and for you to trumpet the chemical brothers as
being 'psychedelic', well i hope you understand when i say i find it
impossible to take you seriously. ah, funk, funk. well, it's been said
that funk comes in many different flavours. i can only say that funk 'chem
style' tastes pretty much like anti-freeze. call that funk? i've heard
more funk going on in your average schubert tune.
'dancable' but not chicago-house-stupid? i wasn't aware that a chemical
brothers record was so intellectually rich! my god, you might be able to
dance to it, but only if you can bring yourself to discard the barrage of
inspiring and thoughtful messages being thrown at you! the chems might
even topple orbital from their throne as kings of fuzzy-wuzzy utopian
dogshit, yes, they are that INTELLIGENT!
and a 'tough and brutal fusion of hip hop and acid house'? i've never
heard anything tough or brutal in one of their tracks - just lots of loud
processed breaks with iceberg-sized cliches - it's EASY LISTENING. and one
minute you're calling chicago house stupid, then saying the chems are
influenced by it! make your mind up, if you've got one!
cheerio!
