one store i neglected to recommend, since it was outside the philly locale, was modern music. these guys, especially pj dorsey, are the nicest bunch of folks you'll ever meet in the industry. while i lived in the charles village area, pj was nice enough to hand-deliver, yes, hand-deliver my order -- and at no extra charge; he offered to send it this way. that's Service. plus you'll have a pretty hard time finding lower prices and rare goods, delievered in pristine condition -- i bought digeridoo for eleven dollars. in adddition, everyone there knows the stock: what's there, when it's coming in, and what to recommend -- if you're a newbie to the world of all the different electronic music cliques, modern music staff will recommend, sans attitude, where to start and within a budget. i just can't kiss their ass enough, so here's their phone number: (410) 675-2172 call them; give them your money, you won't regret it alex Alex Reynolds polygon@jhu.edu Senior User Consultant Homewood Academic Computing Johns Hopkins University

No kidding... I completely agree with this... I regularly place an order, end up not sending $ for a week, but NEVER have anything but understanding and such... pj is the shit... plus he seems to find whatever your after (if it doesn't just happen to show up on the restock list anyways...) Just can't go wrong with Modern Music... Other personal favs... 4th World (Scotland), Drop Beat (Oakland) and Etherworld (San Fran)... actually, Etherworld is something everyone should check out (prices look unbeatable... sorry to say... my money will still go to MM or 4th World 1st though =) Drop Beat are just nice guys... sent me my Dot sticker and magnifying len with my Dot cd comp =) __________________________________________ sfwd@sonic.net HeathenNet (Under_Constant_Construction) http://www.sonic.net/~brap/ heavy rotation: Squarepusher 'Hard Normal Daddy' We 'As Is' v/a 'The Knights Who Say Dot' Scar Tissue 'TMOTD' Speedy J 'public energy no.1'

While I never got stuff hand delivered I have to say that my mail order experiences with Modern Music has been nothing short of excellent. They held onto the Dot releases for at least 2 weeks before sending them off when a potential Baltimore trip fell through. I also have to recommend Planet X in New Brunswick, NJ. These guys should share the nicest guys in the industry award with Modern Music. They don't always have every last IDM item in stock but if you ask them for something they don't have they'll do their best to get it for you. I managed to get Alroy Road Tracks & Conumber from them when they were impossible to find. Not to mention Phat Lab Nightmare, Woodenspoon and Vert. When I was there last night they had vinyls of SAW85-92 and Classics in stock. Give 'em a call (908.249.0064) or check out www.planetxusa.com. Ask for Spike and tell 'em Howie sent you. enjoy, Howie

I used to do all my shopping at modern music, resource, planet x and a few other on-line stores but now i do all my on-line shopping at bent crayon at http://www.bentcrayon.com John, the owner, is very knowledgable and helpful about all styles of electronic music and indie rock. He sends out a weekly mailing list of new arrivals that includes nice little reviews too. I've found that Bent Crayon has consistently good prices, often cheaper that other places I shop. Also Bent Crayon always seems to get those titles that no other stores can. I don't work for Bent Crayon, I'm just a very satisfied customer. I just thought I'd let you all in on one of the best-kept secrets in on- line record shopping. -->-Lance--- p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states

the nice little reviews are usually the reviews you would see if you recieved the fax from Watts Music (if you are a record store). those are the Watts Music descriptions written by the employees there. bennyblanco

Yeah. I live right around this fine establishment, and I shop there also. John does know what he's talking about, he e-mails out a *huge* release sheet every week, and also a pre-release sheet. If you live in teh cleveland area, check it out. It's at the corner of W.116 and Detroit. Or you can order online, like he said. SHANe
