not to bad mouth 611 (too much), as nigel+co. know their goods, but after a short three-minute conversation i got a vibe that, because I'm not wearing baggy pants or a dreadbag on my head i'm not 'hip,' and therefore unknowledgable about the music i'm after, and, finally, unworthy to discuss stock in hand. point 2: the import selection is way overpriced; when i was in 611 over christmas, i saw RDJ for 30 dollars! you've read correctly -- a hop, skip, and jump to tower records yielded same warp release for 17 dollars; just who are we kidding here? on a positive note, the guy was nice enough to offer to mail order anything out of stock, and when i bought the three album leo anibaldi rephlex set and found only two records in the sleeve after a half-hour drive, they were nice enough to refund the purchase price. if you're in the philly area, i would recommend repo records off route 30 on the main line -- good (no, incredible) prices, and some rare warp and rephlex cds to be found if you're patient. plus the staff don't have a ten-foot pole up their asses as most stores do these days (christ, guys, we're paying you a mark-up for this stuff -- lay off the i'm-a-dj-thus-holier-than-thou attitude). again, if there is a kind idmer soul out there with an extra ticket to the phoenix festival at the end of july, let me know. -alex Alex Reynolds polygon@jhu.edu Senior User Consultant Homewood Academic Computing Johns Hopkins University

I would strongly advise against using 611. I have called their mail order numerous times [okay actually I only ordered twice..] and I was hung up on... they give you that infamous line of "okay call back in 15 minutes and ask for so-and-so.." and I call back and the guy is not in or on the shitter or out to break or some bullshit like that. Furthermore they won't let you pay with a credit card which means you have to pay their crappy-ass COD charges. I have tried many places [611, Modernmusic and a few others which I can't remember the names of at the moment.. oh yeah Sound Factory being one of those others...] Anyways after all of that hassle and being overcharged (Modernmusic charges $6.99 for most of its domestic releases) I found a place in south florida called the dj store that hooks me up great whenever I call. There is a supernice guy named kimi who always helps me out whenever I'm buying slabs... they have a website too... www.djstore.com /$0.02 poorer.... pt

well, when i got to 611, i usually just go for the obscure stuff that hasn't caught on much yet (spymania, ninjatune/ntone, source). sure, it's $15 for ed rush, but do you really wanna go to a decent store and buy something you can get at nearly any dj store? 611's still got the selection and prices to boot--obscure stuff is *always* under $10, unless it's limited or something. bought my underworld spikee/dogman go woof 12" there in '93 for $6. of course, two years later, i saw it for $20. but whaddaya expect? and as for their attitudes--i just don't talk to them. i remember the day i bought photek ni ten ichi ryu there--everybody else in the store was clamoring for the new soul slinger single. the cashier guy thought i was a twit buying that obscure lame-o stuff instead of soul slinger. but i know, in the long run, i got the better record. :D

Actually, i ended up paying $45 for the album and single...They were availible as imports for a couple months b4 being released domestically. Impatience can be a very expensive... adam
