You guys are talkin some kind of fancy tech talk and I think I may be missing something useful and interesting.... Is this thread basically asking "How can I sample from a CD without going through the analog sound card channels?" Is this possible? Can one turn a cd track into a WAV file directly? I've done this using the line out to line in on the sound card with mediocre results. What's the scoop (without too many acronyms, please!). -CF Various people wrote:

here's my $.02 c worth i have tried cdworks, and it didnt like my cdrom, so i tried CDDA which although is dos-based, works fine.... Btw, if you want cd audio quality, the wave file runs to about 10 mb /min (full stereo 44k sample rate) if anyone wants a copy, mail me .... through the re-mailer, over the router, off the server, nothing but net in Cyberspace, everyone can hear you scream.....

Yeah.

Yes, again. Just make sure you have alot of hard drive space.

I've tried that too, but got popping sounds, etc. You have to check out the program I mentioned called CDworx. It's fairly easy to find on the net. It allows you to choose where you want to start and stop on the disc too, if you don't want the whole track recorded. It has some kind of special reading process that takes out the pops and records in CD quality (well that's what the programmers for the software say but some say you can hear the degregradation in quality, I honestly can't). Some people take the WAV file that the program creates and encode it using MP3 compression. It compresses at about 11 to 1 ratio. You then can listen to your "sample" through a MP3 player like Winplay or Musearc.

Check it out (without the fancy tech talk). At http://www.windows95.com/ you can find Disk to Disc (or Disc to Disk) which I have verified to work with a CDROM Reader that DIDO did not work. It reads the CD Audio digital data straight off of the CD without a sound card at all (mine wasn't in). Try the 32 Bit Apps|Multimedia?CD Players section. Ravis1 emailing from work. Travis L.
