Grabbed this yesterday on CD. Errr... My opinion -- another try at what is being hyped as "drill and bass" but fairly lame in my opinion. Some of the break programming is OK, but there are places where the jackhammer rolls get totally out of hand. It's a cool effect, but just triggering way-to-loud buzzing noises at random points doesn't fit my definition of funky or soulful. Again (like Vic Acid) rather indifferent production (mono or close to it, super-compressed, not enough low end). I don't know if it's supposed to be a big mystery who did it or not, but it sounds like perhaps Tom Jenkinson did it on an off day. For the Americans I found out through a net search that "Rubber Johnny" is british slang for a condom. Many of the hits on the alta vista search were on the Young Ones, which figures... --------------------------------------------------------------------- Kent Williams kent@inav.net -- http://soli.inav.net/~kent

If I recall, Rubber Johny = Johny Clayton, otherwise known as Squarepusher's graphic designer (did the covers for Feed Me..., Vic Acid and Hard Normal Daddy). I may be wrong though... The single was just a limited one-off. Aaron

This has been discussed before. No, it isn't Johnny Clayton. Nor is it any other 'IDM' icon under an alias. adam

I'm sure Adam is quite sure as he has met Mr. R.Johnny on several occasions. He's just a bloke from Sheffield. g.

i heard that Rubber Johnny was the geezer from Seefeel.... -- k.F "I tried unloading banana trains and for while I had a job collecting horses hooves for a sausage skin and glue manufacturer. They also gave me a job after that, throwing cows heads into a bone crushing machine.I soon realised that these jobs weren't really what I wanted to do." -Lol Coxhill Quote.
