I figured I could keep out of this one, but this is a bit much:

Open your eyes, people. The US has more than its fair share of "IDM" labels. Try Plug Research, Planet E, Plus8, Matrix, Astralwerks (admittedly a bit commercial these days, but still), Ntone/Ninjatune (with a North American office), NovaMute, Metroplex...the list goes on. Obviously everyone gets bummed about high import prices at times. I decided a while ago to do something about that: I've stopped buying a lot of imports, favoring the amount of domestic stuff I can get at a lower price for the $11 12" singles and $24 double vinyl albums that imports tend to be. I figure by supporting quality American labels instead of supporting import-only snobbery, it's bound to help (plus I walk away from a store with almost twice as many records in my bag). You want to talk about deprived? Try the guy on 313 in Singapore, or listmembers in Brazil and other countries where this music is equally hard to find. There really is some truth to the idea that Americans are spoiled... Bill / dj marathon

yes, but we would also like to see artists like AFX, Squarepusher, etc. from the UK actually come to the US more than once every leap year :)

hm.. where do you buy your records that double vinyl albums are $24?! I have yet to buy an import double vinyl (new stuff, not old rare stuff) that's costed more than $19.99. most of them I've bought are $17.99 actually, I think the last one was Jimi Tenor: Intervision, which was $19.99. and most of the 12"'s I've bought are $9.99.

maybe so, but not because we want some of our favorite artists to come here. I reckon a certain Finnish person declared his wishes for Aphex Twin to go play in Finland, so it's not just us _Americans_ who are "spoiled," as you are calling it. .auddplte <-- panasonic: vakio sampler __ __\ \ / /_\ \ \_____/ , m7=

Yeah, I'm starting to do the same thing myself. Why pay the big bucks all the time when you can find great quality IDM in our "back yard" for nearly half the price. The over seas stuff is too good to ignore though and I find myself still having to buy imports frequently -- I must get that new Bochum Welt *soon*. | E r i c | [mail] franse@engr.arizona.edu | | F r a n s | [web] http://engr.arizona.edu/~franse | "Make the events occur that you want to occur" - The Black Dog

Hey, I know a place here in Cleveland that I can get every band we talk about here's stuff. For around $20 or less. It's called Bent Crayon, and I would be happy to get stuff for people. E-mail me. SHANe

I get all my new stuff at Modern Music, and always for $20 or less on the 2x12" and $9.99 on the 12"'s, and these are imports. __ __\ \ / /_\ \ \_____/ , m7=

Also, Bent Crayon has a web site at, what-do-you-know, www.bentcrayon.com.. It has very good prices, but does not tell you the shipping costs right on there--you have to email them with your order.. The best prices (for what i've been looking for) can be found at Dropbeat (http://www.dropbeat.com/catalog.html). Everything is <= $20. The shipping here is $4 for 1 or $4.50 for 2-4 CDs and then +$0.50 for each additional. Future Sounds catalog has very good prices also. (http://www.dhp.com/~futursnd/cds.html) Shipping can be very cheap ($1.47 for 1 cd + $0.50 for each additional) or for a bit faster, $3 for 1-3, $4 for 3-6, +$0.50 for each additional) or UPS ($5.50 for up to 5, $0.40 for each additional) Finally, Ultra has decent prices (a bit higher) and lots of realaudio samples. (http://www.ultronic.com/welcome2.html) Shipping is pretty high. I'm sure most of you know about these, but for those who don't... grav
