With the postings that have appeared here in the last two days concerning Kraftwerk, I am surprised no one has mentioned the news featured in the Nov. 30th issue of Melody Maker... Of course it makes sense that no one who listens to IDM would ever even THINK of picking up anything of lesser hip status than Jockey Slut from their local record shops. Here's the skinny: "Kraftwerk are strongly tipped to release a new LP in the first half of next year. The seminal Krautrock band have been in the studio in Dusseldorf working on material over the past few months though their record label, EMI, says there is no firm release date. The bands last release was "The Mix", a compilation album of old material remixed by contemporary producers." Well, well, well... are Ralf & Florian ready to move it all to the next level? Funny little things about this news. First of all, they own their own studio, Kling Klang, and according to statements from the band, are there quite often there working. So unless they said to EMI, "Ve Haff zum new material to release, ja", this could be just silly speculation. Secondly, MM got the info wrong about "The Mix". It was a remix album, but all the remixes were the bands own! They had digitized all their analogue tapes and remixed it all themselves. There was a single of "Radioactivity", with remixes by Francois Kevorkian and William Orbit, but these mixes were not on the album. Jockey Slut would never have made such a grave error in their reporting! I hope this is for real, and I hope the boys have been listening to whats been going on out there... though I think for them to put out a drums & bass record would be totally wack. Let Photek and Roni Size handle the remixes this time!!! Has anyone ever noticed that Speedy J's "Flashback" from Ginger (1993) has the same bassline as one of William Orbit's "Radioactivity" mixes (1991)? Given tha its just a 5 note bassline, it could be coincidence, but me and a buddy were shocked at the similarities between these tow tracks when we played them back to back. Chill Che

KRAFTWERK have confirmed they are working on new material for an album with a tentative release date set for September. In addition, the band are to have all their albums reissued with extra tracks to mark their Tribal Gathering appearance on May 24. Band members Ralf Hutter and Florian Schneider will be joined at Tribal Gathering by musicians Fritz Hilpert and Henning Schmitz, who accompanied the band on their UK dates promoting 'The Mix' in 1991. They plan to play four new songs during their performance. NME understands that tapes of three new Kraftwerk tracks have been received by the band's London record company, EMI. They were recorded at the band's Kling-Klang Studio in Dusseldorf. Security is tight with only two employees of the company said to have heard it. The first Kraftwerk reissue, 'The Man-Machine' will be released by EMI on June 2. The album, originally issued in 1978, will come with an extra CD featuring three German vocal versions of old Kraftwerk songs: 'Neon Lights' ('Neonlicht'), 'The Model' ('Das Modell') and 'The Robots' ('Die Roboter'). It will be followed in July by repackaged versions of 'Radio-Activity' and 'Trans-Europe Express', both featuring extra tracks. EMI also plan to release four limited-edition 12" singles to coincide with Tribal Gathering. There will only be 250 copies each of: 'Trans-Europe Express' backed by an instrumental B-side; 'Numbers' and 'Musique Non-Stop' (both backed by the same track); and 'Home Computer' backed by 'It's More Fun To Compute'. They will be packaged in a box with a free T-shirt. In related news, BBC Radio One will be transmitting Kraftwerks set from The Tribal Gathering Festival, and their www site will also transmit in RealAudio!!! Transmission time 10:30 GMT May 24th. Whose Web site? Kraftwerk's, or BBC Radio One's? What are their URL's? (And if it's Radio One, if anyone from the Beeb is reading, *PLEASE* use an Dual-Rate ISDN RA link if possible for those of us who aren't bandwidth challenged ... )

I assume you really meant 22:30 GMT ... (or "10:30 PM GMT") and will it really be at 22:30/10:30 PM? Isn't England on Daylight Savings Time? Isn't England actually at GMT+1 during this period? - Greg
