well for the most part it was a failed attempt to see the orb...due to my own bad planning and lack of familiartity w/ public trasport around san francisco and oakland...i completely missed the orb (who i really wanted to see in the first place) so the chem bros: in a nutshell i was told that they are better live than they used to be.....it was such a *concert* i feel sorta like a schmuk....i'm glad i went.....but...... there was a girl screaming after the show who pretty much let out all of my rage for me.....something to the effect of "I SPENT $30 FOR 4 HOURS FUCK THAT SHIT" yeah.... can anyone tell me why the orb had to play first.....is this the status quo for the rest of their tour in the states?? anyone??? did anyone see the orb....did they rock out? or was it such a concert atmosphere that i didn't miss all that much.....(wah!) so my ears hurt worse now that after i saw alec empire and co. aaron.........

i too was a victim of the sods who planned this gig. (and my own b-type get-there-when-you-get-there personality) if the last couple of tunes by the orb were representative, we both missed out! i got there just in time for toxygene which (imho) shredded any recorded version of that track. the chembros have really beefed up their set, making things less dat-like and more "in the mix..." but i agree that it was "concert-like" -- they have placed brit/club/break/house where van halen used to be. remember the hydra? cut off one head and another grows back in its place. 'nuff said. as for the orb "opening," alex said he didn't care to think of himself as a headliner and that he was satisfied with the number of people who had already purchased orb records. keep it that way, alex! but _this_ was a stretch. i was insulted when pop will eat itself "opened" for emf. but two-album new kids on the block opening for a seven album genre-defining artist? up next: mike & rich open for the sneaker pimps. . . kaiser concert emporium was bad enough... i was assured this event would go until 2am... people mentioned alex would be spinning later... all a bunch of "the artist is disconnected from the event promoter is separate from the venue owner" rumor-mill Bullshit. any one for a game of telephone? Cheers to alex & tom, ed t, and anyone who helped. a Pox on anyone who didn't and thus contributed to the premature beginning, short duration, and expense of the show. sorry for any wasted bw,

They started _before_ 8:00. "Secrets", "Blue Room", and "Asylum" were just thrown away ... the doors were still open, people milling about, nobody knew what was going on. Ridiculous. Fortunately, the next track was "Outlands", which tore it up and was the highlight of the set, followed by an industrial version of "Delta".

They're a rock band.

I think they alternated ... One night Chems first, next night Orb first. Maybe not ... if it was always the Orb opening, that seems like _really_ bad planning to me.

It was good ... good visuals & content, nice crowd, some excellent new mixes ... they could have played more old stuff. They were much more professional than the Chems. Anyone know what happened to the bassist and drummer, though?

Amen to that. It was too loud at the front of the hall, and at the back all you got was slapback.

Nope.

Yeah -- it was a slow set, but I never thought I could dance that hard to 90 bpm. More danceable than the Chems in most places, actually. Pretty impressive.

Some of their beats in the first few songs _rocked_hard_, but then they just lost it with some mediocre trance and nonsense. Too loud, too much panning, and I can think of lots of folks who do the same thing but better. "Chemical Beats" was the shit in its glory day, but there it was almost embarrassing. I like the Chems just fine, mind you, but it doesn't look like they know their own strengths.
