It's *definitely* not you. This album is simply top-notch. For those who are bewailing the fact that Jochem didn't put out another G-Spot, deal with it. This disc is sheer beauty and subtlety. I've listened to it twice so far, both times on headphones, and I'm blown away. Headphones, incidentally, are the way to go on this album, I think. This is one album I've made time to devote to just listening to, and it's soo worth it. Each track bears its own identity, but still feels like part of a greater whole, which a large accomplishment, in my opinion, and the sign of a good album versus a collection of tracks. I think what people are objecting to in not having another G-Spot-esqe album is the fact that it's not all pretty melody and trancy beats. But the melodies are still there; in fact, there are some strikingly beautiful melodies ("Canola" comes to mind). The melodies are tempered this time with some deep distorted beats and soundscapes, so the easy comparisons are to Aphex, Autechre, and U-ziq. Of these, I think the Autechre comparison is most fitting, but I'm no AE expert. All in all, I consider this an essential album, bridging the gap between beauty/emotion and progress/innovation. peace, Bill / dj marathon -- f u t u r e listening radio show - hosted by dj marathon t h u r s d a y 10pm-1am o n wmtu 91.9 fm e l e c t r o n i c m u s i c * w i t h * s o u l http://www.hu.mtu.edu/~wdvanloo/personal/

I'm glad to see this new direction for Mr. Speedy. His Public Energy stuff was hard and abrasive, but I never thought any stuff under the Speedy J name would venture into that territory. The album is nice too because he balances everything with some more ambient tracks as well. Overall a great piece of work. } the alt. frequencies comp. CD is nothing but incredible... Definitely! Is this still in print, by the way? I'm still kicking myself for not picking this up when it first came out and now I'm fairly bruised. At least I dubbed it onto tape from a friend. I wish a full-length by Tom Jenkinson would appear that sounded like his tracks on there. } and the "rubber johnny" CD is overrated. Another agreement here. I'm not quite sure what I expected with this release, since it was shrouded in mystery. However, I was expecting more from the Warp posse on this -- it just kind of falls flat and wiggles a little. | E r i c | [mail] franse@engr.arizona.edu | | F r a n s | [web] http://engr.arizona.edu/~franse | "Make the events occur that you want to occur" - The Black Dog on: Sad World - Cordoba
