It's *definitely* not you. This album is simply top-notch. For
those who are bewailing the fact that Jochem didn't put out another
G-Spot, deal with it. This disc is sheer beauty and subtlety. I've
listened to it twice so far, both times on headphones, and I'm blown away.
Headphones, incidentally, are the way to go on this album, I
think. This is one album I've made time to devote to just listening to,
and it's soo worth it. Each track bears its own identity, but still feels
like part of a greater whole, which a large accomplishment, in my opinion,
and the sign of a good album versus a collection of tracks.
I think what people are objecting to in not having another
G-Spot-esqe album is the fact that it's not all pretty melody and trancy
beats. But the melodies are still there; in fact, there are some
strikingly beautiful melodies ("Canola" comes to mind). The melodies are
tempered this time with some deep distorted beats and soundscapes, so the
easy comparisons are to Aphex, Autechre, and U-ziq. Of these, I think the
Autechre comparison is most fitting, but I'm no AE expert.
All in all, I consider this an essential album, bridging the gap
between beauty/emotion and progress/innovation.
