Does anyone know where I could find a copy of the _music for stowaways_ tape that BEF (British Electric Foundation = Heaven 17 - Glenn Gregory and early Human League - Phil Oakey) released somewhere around 1981 ? I have one track on the b-side of Heaven 17's _fascist groove thang_ which is really good, kinda like ?-Ziq's ambient stuff but +10 years earlier, very analog and squeecky. I also gave Human League's EP (parts 1-4) that was mentioned some time ago (I forget the name, it's also on the _reproduction_ cd - worth checking out folks ! as is _travelogue_) and found it to be quite refreshing and goodsounding eventhough it's 15 years old. More of this old electro/wave thread please, I've grown up with it !!! dv8

Well, you could find one in my closet, but then I'd have to kill you ;-)

Funny that you mentioned BEF, I was going to post about "Music For Stowaways" myself while that thread was still going but it slipped my mind. (I can still remember Paul Morley's NME singles review where his 2 Singles of The Week were "Fascist Groove Thang" and New Order's "Ceremony", in which he described going down to Heaven to see New Order and bursting into tears ... ) One problem with this thread is that once you get beyond the obvious, the titles and artists tend to slip out of the memory banks. (Anyone ever heard of Slava Ranko?) Back then, as now, a lot of great music came out that no one ever heard about. I get depressed reading sm@4thworld's posts, there's probably hundreds upon hundreds of worthy releases that slip through our collective hands, to be lost to the sands of time. Oh yeah, great electronica releases of 1981 ... let me add the first Chris and Cosey album. - Greg

i may have been dreaming, but i believe i heard that some of the old BEF / H17 stuff is getting a re-release right about now. could have been a hallucination though, i'm prone to that. pulled out the old groove thang recently, pretty cool to hear a 303 actually used as a proper bassline, sans tweakage. The first two Heaven 17 albums (PENTHOUSE AND PAVEMENT, LUXURY GAP) are supposed to be re-released this month (domestically) with extra tracks. -- Mark Turner mturner@netcom.com
