It was a 10" that came out a few years ago on Clawfist. One side is a track called 'Animal Or Vegetable', it's a droney Stereolab track with Steve Stapelton (Nurse With Wound) contributing 'Nurse With Wound' sounds (if you've heard them before you know what I mean...creaking things, chants, duck noises, general sillyness). The other side is the track 'Exploding Head Movie'. The 10" was really limited but I think World Serpent re-issued it on CD at one point. Jeff

this 10" was re-issued as NWW/Stereolab 'Crumb Duck', on United Dairies, 059 CD and limited edition (500 copies) 12", on dayglo vinyl with two other NWW pieces and one previously unreleased remix I?bought mine from Rough Trade shop in London, and they claim this was a speciall pressing just for Rough Trade ( http://www.roughtrade.com ) then last year Duophonic issued a different, new collaboration between Stereolab and Nurse with wound, also strictly ltd.(DS33-11) The tracks are ' Simple headphone mind' and 'Trippin with the birds'- two different mixes of the same song. (don't know more about this one, since it's still on it's way..) btw, I noticed at 4th world another lab 12" on duophonic, Metronomic Underground/Percolations it's a new one, I guess.. anybody has it/heard it? mk

the two stereolab/nww tracks are also on the refried ectoplasm singles comp. for those that want to save a bit of cash. one of these tracks (i think "animal or vegetable") is actually a remake of a faust track "it's a rainy day, sunshine girl" from their album "so far". david *+* on now:conrad schnitzler-consequenz http://home.connectnet.com/lotus/

oh my god, i can't believe you said that! though i do remember mylsef saying many years back that RDJ had no talent, i am aware now that i was somehow mislead by industrial music. "I Care..." has some of the greatest melodies i've ever heard. "RDJ Album" has some funk-ass melodies too. though i don't know what you might be looking for in a melody, listen carefully and i'm sure you'll find it in RDJs tunes. whistlability is a majory plus when it come to melodies, and that's why bjork and stereolab also rule the melody-scene. i, unfortunely, can't write melodies worth shit so i like to rely on fractal music generation on occasion. or stick to monotonous shtuff. tomas np: Roots Manuva - Brand New Second Hand

I heard a recording of Bjork singing with some jazz band. I was in a sushi restaurant in Chicago last night and it came lofting through the air to our table. Any idea which record this might have been? And I haven't heard any Stereolab stuff. Can you recommend a good first foray into their material?

Hmm, this sounds quite interesting. Which program do you use for fractal generation? BTW, I'm back on the list after being away for some time. I finally have the time to keep up on the traffic. Well, more time than I used to. ;-) Steven White /"\ http://barkingcat.org \ / X ASCII RIBBON CAMPAIGN / \ AGAINST HTML MAIL

Refried Ectoplasm. Much like the more recent Aluminum Trees, this is a collection of their earlier hard-to-find odds and ends. Excellent. I'm sad I haven't got this (had to return a damaged copy to the shop, who were unable to replace it). I * ~ you can also mail me at <lime909@hotmail.com>

All but the last two or three tracks are in Icelandic, but if you're a fan of Bjork's voice it's something to check out. I don't think it was released in the US, but I'm pretty sure you can still order it and I've seen it in a local shop a few times. Jeremy

that wouldn't be something i'd recommend anyone, much less a stereolab newbie. just get dots & loops, or even better, emperor tomato ketchup (my personal favorite), & if you can stand it, go backwards in time from there. refried ectoplasm is my least favorite stereolab record & i'm pretty glad i sold it. there's a total of around 3 good songs on it. good old stereolab is 'transient random noise bursts with announcements' & 'the groop played space age batchelor pad music'. if the length of the title of the next release is any indication, it should be quite good. but i doubt i'll buy it. -- david
