whoever posted that this was fun was right. 1976 grant. phildadelphia, PA 1982 theme to burgertime, _pac-man fever_. vague recollections of bob james, herb alpert [rise], _sailing_, the jackson five. cyndi lauper, olivia newton john, hall + oates. bowie's _lets dance_ seems to be a childhood favorite. i'd love to know why. 1985 grant. new orleans, LA 1987 whatever was played on the schoolbus, theme from super mario bros., old 1950's rockabilly, soul, and beach-pop records i discovered in my dad's closet. dec. 25 1987 received a stereo with a cd player. 1988 purchased my first cd, _electric cafe_, after hearing "telephone" on the radio. 1989 dj jazzy jeff and fresh prince [i was 13 and out of my mind]. 1990 janet jackson, black box, deee-lite. realization of the concept of 'house.' watched a lot of BET and The Box; secretly got into Cathy Denis, Lisa Stansfield, Oaktown 357. friend lent me a copy of _3 feet high and rising_. 1991 nirvana. right said fred. haha. 1992 theme from super mario world. purchase of a nervous nyc records house compilation. trading of cassette dubs of horrible rave comps between likeminded friends. 1993 more horrible rave and house. found wwoz 90.7 on my radio dial. jazz. fell in love with jazz instantly. summer 1993 purchased orb's _uforb_ after hearing a snippet of it on mtv and realizing 'that's what i've been looking for.' purchased my first jazz record, _the ellis marsalis trio_. 1994 more tacky compilations. _ultraworld_. getting a driver's license, and driving throughout downtown new orleans on saturday nights alone + listening to WWOZ's fantastic reggae show. increased appreciation for reggae and dub. summer 1994 read about the artificial intelligence series in a music paper. music descriptions and cover art were unlike anything i had seen before. intrigued beyond belief. purchased _surfing on sine waves_, _diversions_ and _dimension intrusion_ after reading reviews. nasty rave compilation purchases subsided almost immediately. 1995 _snivilization_, _protection_, quango's _journey into ambient groove 1_, _orbvs terrarvm_, _azimuth_, system 7. hear _bike_ on college radio, but never find out who it's by. have it on cassette, listen to it daily.late night drives home from work allowed me opportunities to listen to wque's hiphop jams. increaased appreciation of ill al skratch, gangstarr, de la soul, nas. fell in love with east coast hiphop. fall, 1995 grant. fort worth, TX. college. _spanners_, _isdn_, _lifeforms_, some bad jungle compilations. geordan drummond sells me _on_. amazing, amazing. buy _saw 2_ on a whim; knocks me dead. steal _mu-ziq vs. the auteurs_ and _musik_ from college radio station. purchase the entire black dog CD catalog in one day. find b12's _electro-soma_ for $5 at blockbuster. listen to _incunabula_ at blockbuster music on a whim. track 2 : bike. i purchase two copies. nathan @ album's up sells me _hangable autobulb_, my first record. amazing music, opens me up to vinyl [life has never been the same]. _timeless_, _in pine effect_, _76:14_. 1996 _i care because you do._, _ventolin_, _throbbing pouch_. join IDM list. the trainspotting begins. warp, rephlex, clear, reflective, metalheadz, skam, source, rising high, etc. i've probably spent over 10 grand on music and turntables since then, and i blame every last one of you. grant.

I'm glad I reminded me. There was a song released in the mid 80's [1987?] entitled "The Point of No Return." Real nasty, poppy thing. I think the performers were a husband and wife duo, but I'm not positive. The track received a fair share of radio airplay, but I doubt it got outside of the US. If anyone knows the name of the group, or the name of the album, I WILL BE FOREVER IN YOUR DEBT if you could reply back to me. There's a long disgusting story as to why I need this song. I remember that the height of popularity of this track and the Oliver North hearings coincided at the same time. Thanks, and sorry for the lack of IDM content. grant.h.horne

Ah damn. I can't remember either. I even called my sister who's this big 80's geek and she didn't even know what I was talking about. I do remember though that the video for this song featured the lead- singer sitting at a table disassebling/re-assembling a coffee pot. Pieces of it were floating around the room, along with cogs and other bits and pieces of mechanical innards. It was a very subdued video... she just sat there mouthing the words and fidgeting with her screwdriver. The band's name is two words. I'm sure that doesn't help at all though. I suppose I'm obligated to put down my own personal history now, eh? Pre-1993: lots of pop music, but I did manage to catch _some_ electronic stuff - m/a/r/r/s's "Pump up the volume" (which I had played at my wedding this summer!), Technotronic,etc. 1991-1993 - after MC Hammer and assorted other dogdy pop-rap acts (hey, I liked to dance; gimme a break), I discovered real hip-hop. Used to watch Yo! MTV raps and the hip-hop show on BET daily; saw A Tribe Called Quest's videos of "Bonita Applebaum" and "I left my wallet", as well as "Check the rhime" (a classic), but didn't buy anything until I saw ATCQ on Arsenio. They performed "Scenario", and the next day I bought "the low end theory". I've been in love with upright bass and horns ever since, and will to this day swear that Q-tip is the embodiement of hip-hop. Also, I encountered my first "rave" - a guy doing this dance had a copy of the original Rave 'Til Dawn, and I was blown away by "O Fortuna". Copied the CD to tape. 1993 - entered college, listening to native tongues hip-hop and a mish-mash of assorted other stuff. Began doing a radio show with a friend who liked mostly pop music (def leppard, guns-n-roses, etc) and I started doing a short hip-hop block during our 6-9am show. Later that year I got my own show, friday nights, playing strictly hip-hop. 1994 - first real discoveries of "techno". surprisingly enough, it came from an XL recordings compilation, "the american chapter". had "charlie" by the prodigy, "Dub war" by SL2, which I was into, but what blew me away was the Awesome 3 track "Don't go". My first exposure to "hardcore". Later that year I got the Speed Limit 140 bpm vol. 2 comp, which had the early Metalheadz track "Kemistry". Thought it was great. got volume 3 of the series. Also started branching out on my radio show, playing stuff off "musik" by plastikman and other stuff I could lay my hands on. Orb, moby (yikes) and many other discoveries were made this year. 1995 - started to discover that "hardcore" was now called "jungle". Loved knowing I'd started semi-early with this new offshoot, and started getting even more into regular techno. There's no cuase to get snippy with me, Mr. Lundergaard. I figure, if my college radio station isn't going to use it, why can't I have it? Got to the point where the music director let me have essentally whatever I wanted, since techno is for fags, you know. I have over twenty Axiom CDs thanks to KTCU. Also got - 'aphex twin - words and music' 'aphex twin - sinking the titanic' tri repetae, remotion, theory of evolution + tons of other promos and live recordings that was destined to collect dust. was given over 1,000 jazz lps when ktcu cancelled jazz programming. THANK YOU KTCU FOR BEING A SHIT COLLEGE RADIO STATION.
