He has a new cd coming out real soon called "Playing with Fools". He also put out a lot of singles under the name Planetary Assault System. Peacefrog compiled the singles and released it as Archives. B i l l S a m u e l s w l s @ U . A r i z o n a . E D U

Actually there was a new 12" released by Luke this past week under the alias Deputy Dog. I forget what label it's on though. I'll call my local record guy and find out all the info later today. -->-Lance---

i've been hearing the luke slater name kicked around a little bit..always associated with Mills, Surgeon, etc., but i've never heard any of his stuff except for Planetary Assault Systems which, by the way, kicks my ass very nicely thank you. how does his other stuff compare? and how easy is it to get?

As far as Idm-ish stuff, no I don't think so. He has released a lot of stuff under the name Planetary Assault System, which is also very good...but it is intended more for dancing

That sounds like exactly my position too. I love MYWR and really wanted to get some more stuff by the guy. He released 'Shades Amaze' concept EP a while ago on GPR which is the last I've got of his 7th Plain work. I'm pretty sure that in the last couple of months he released a new EP as 7th Plain on GPR - 'Tri-cendance' or something like that. I haven't got hold of a copy yet. Hope this helps -Ed

The 7th Plain TRJ-Cendance GENP(X)11 12" The 7th Plain To Be Surreal GENP(X)16 12" The 7th Plain Astra-Naut-E GENP(X)19 12" The 7th Plain Shades Amaze GENP(X)36 12"/CDS The 7th Plain Four Cornered Room GPRLP/CD/MC3 2xLP/CD/MC The 7th Plain My Yellow Wise Rug GPRLP/CD/MC8 2xLP/CD/MC "TRJ-Cendance" is by no means new, let alone a couple of months old. It is the hardest of the four 7th Plain EPs released on GPR, with very aggressive and dancefloor-oriented drum programming. "To Be Surreal" is rather hard to digest; it sounds much like a waypoint between the previous and next EPs. "Astra-Naut-E" is the most relaxed and melodic of the four, and includes a reprised version of "Seeing Sense" from the "Four Cornered Room" full-length. The "Shades Amaze" concept EP collects some remixes of the track and offers nothing spectacular. "Four Cornered Room" and "My Yellow Wise Rug" are both well-balanced and good-sounding albums. Though the sounds on "Four Cornered Room" are a bit more muddy than on "My Yellow Wise Rug," as a concept it is more solid. It is indeed a pity that GPR has taken a long vacation which seems to have become permanent. They should have at least had the decency to release the Nev album before that. -- nuutti 'gordon' meriläinen. gordon@vip.fi. diversion communications. technostructuralist.

I just picked it up last week. It seems mellower than MYWR, and frankly it didn't grab my attention too much - I haven't played it since I bought it.

My copy is on GPR.

Hit and miss, as most compilations. Quick review: the opening track by Nus is just terrible - bad vocal alert. Bill Laswell does this sort of dnb thing, I guess it's ok. Going nowhere snoozers from Scanner and Seefeel. Fun resonant drums on the Silk Saw track. The Laibach track is orchestral, not my sort of thing. Mick Harris track is pretty cool - pounding drums, lots of noises, typical little Scorn melody. Goes on too long though. Funkydubby track by Islamic Diggers, I guess this called a breakbeat, and some sample about William S. Burroughs not playing guitar. Then there's Nuuk Posse - - hip hop in some language I don't speak. Pretty generic imo. Mouse on Mars track has lots of weird sounds and a melody, so it wins for me. Last track is David Shea, fast, almost middle eastern sounding. Sounds like Muslimgauze on speed. Jon

The mostly black CD you refer to is probably X-Tront 2 on Peacefrog, a bit harder than most of the stuff on "Yellow Wise Rug". "4-Cornered Room" is more in the same vein as Y.W.L. Personally, I like a guy that covers all the bases.... If you want some floaty Luke Slater, try searching out the "To Be Surreal" EP on GPR. The Goodwrench

Best description I could give is great!!! No seriously, he does so many styles of music you can't easily classify him as one genre. Some of his earlier work under the name 7Th Plain and Luke Slater on GPR is pretty mellow and definitely IDM. He has put out some harder techno under his own name for the X-Tront Series and under the name Planetary Assault System. He has done a more housey project under the name Morganistic. He kind of goes all over the place, and everything is top notch!! I don't think he has put out a spotty piece of work yet. Oh also look for Clementine it's another name he goes under, it's on DJAX. I would buy any Luke Slater on sight. The Love remixes aren't as good as the album version. Cheers - Will _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? which covered most everything. Depending which way you like your IDM, I'd say of his earlier 'ambient-y' output The Four-Cornered Room on GPR is a total winner; the Peacefrog releases are floor friendly and with his most recent (Freek Funk) he's joined the NovaMute Techno stable - top stuff. As Will said, it's worth buying it all on sight (keep feeding da habit). I *

i don't really know luke slater's work from adam, but judging solely from the stupendously horrible remix he recently did for depeche mode and from the profoundly mediocre 12" on playlist at the station I DJ for, it doesn't seem like his work would be all that, let alone include the proverbial bag o' chips. indeed, i was surprised to see someone (not irene) writing that his earlier work was the purest IDM... ...So, being wary of purchasing -- anyone care to post an early Slater MP3 or two to a discreet location? always ready to change my mind (given the impetus), sr -- sd

I am sure the twelve inch you are refering to is the "LOVE" 12". I don't know why the remixes are so weak, but the original album version is FAR SUPERIOR that the remixes. I don't know about his remixes for Depeche Mode. I wouldn't bother buying any of there stuff anyway.

his earlier work was the purest IDM... All of his releases have been very good, except for the remixes of Love which was a real disappointment. If you can look for "My Yellow Wise Rug or "Four Cornered Room". I think the new CD is really great also, but it is more dance-oriented.

Actually if anyone out there has any Luke Slater I don't already own, I will probably buy it or do a trade. Cheers - Will _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? Get your free @yahoo.com address at http://mail.yahoo.com

Morganistic: in the shadow ep is a mix of deep & hard techno very similar to the sound on the early Planetary Assult Systems records or the Morganistic album on the Input Neuron Musique label. 7th Plain: trancedence ep showcases the ligher, more melodic side of Luke Slater featuring smooth detroit- inspiried techno/idm. This one is like the other 7th Plain releases. Luke's two 7th Plain albums are two of my all time favorite releases.

Unfortunately both are way out of print. I seem to remember that there was some liscensing snafu with the Morganistic record back in 92 so the quantities were sickly limited to begin with. The GPR releases were pressed in larger quantities so occassionally the 7th Plain will appear in used or cutout bins. -->-Lance--- p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states

strangely, i thought 'my yellow wise rug' was really bad compared to the 4 cornered room, which, like you said, is still very much an essential record. so i would definitely recommend that cd over the other one. <waves> Subconscious Geography http://www.sub-con-geo.demon.co.uk +/sale +/cdr

Actually now that i just pulled out my two 7th Plain records, i agree with Subconscious Geography. The Four Cornered Room album is easily the better of the two. -->-Lance--- p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states

Just got _Trj-cendance_ the other day - nice 4-tracker of Luke's older Detroit styled techno. Not astounding but pretty pleasant. And yeah, _Four Cornered Room_ is ace - lush, UK IDM from back in the day. || [CiM] || cim_@hotmail.com || - ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

Back in the day indeed - the day being 1994 : both the 4 Cornered Room and Yellow Wise Rug are dated 94 on GPR - which of these came out first? (4CR beating YWR hands down ::: the track "7th Plain" is just soooooooo wonderful.) I * np : Extront Vol 2
