A local shop has the following Rephlex CD's for 8 pounds and I was wondering if anybody could describe/review any of them: - DMX Krew (I like the track on the Octopus recorords comp) - Global Goon - Bochum Welt - Vulva - Birdwatching - X-asp (with a Mike P track) ALSO: I'm surprised that no-one has given any mention to the DJ-kicks mix double CD which is out this week (UK). It's Nicolette (from Massive Attack) mixin' it up with the production skills of Plaid. According to the inlay Plaid produce little links that go between the tracks (as well as having Angry Dolphin actually in the mix). I haven't heard it and would value people's opinion on this. Cheers Nick

i personally thought this was very weak. tries to sound way old skool, but can't hold a candle to the mantronix / afrika or even any of the "new-gen" like Clear Stuff, Jedi Knights, Aux88, Positronic.

simple, quirky uneven. file under apprentice knob twiddlers.

masterful mixture of the influences that make you think back "to the day" and the new sounds that make you glad you're a loyal rephlex customer. several detailed reviews at the BW official homepage at http://www.xnet.com/~jjdavis/bw/.

nice, challenging addition to have in the stack, but not quite as innovative as from the cokpit. some pretty complex and headbobbing lines though.

haven't heard it but it supposed to be pretty good.

Mixed bag album with lots of ideas, some being rather odd. Kinda similar to Expert Knob Twiddlers in the sense that it has a childish flavour.
quoted 1 line - Bochum Welt> - Bochum Welt
Very short album but with some killer tracks. They are all electronic tunes on their own, but I love the ones with the beautiful synthy noises like on the Hangable Auto Bulbs.

Some hard and melodic tracks here, with some excellent use of distorion. Mike's track is very nicely melodic. -Ed

First of all, this stuff is all good, if you pick up any of it you won't be disapointed.

New school electro with some nice hip-hop beats as well. Thats not to say its all retro, there's some house & techno going on, but all of it has this sort of great used bin vibe. Be warned however, there are some tracks with vocals - they're my favorite on the album.
quoted 1 line - Global Goon> - Global Goon
Let's see, this one is the strangest of the bunch. Imagine afx signed to Mo 'Wax and spending alot of time with Money Mark and you're pretty much there.
quoted 1 line - Bochum Welt> - Bochum Welt
Basically, if you like afx's hard stuff you'll like this. This is the sort of record people expect Rephlex to put out. Straight up experimental techno. One of my favorites of last year.
quoted 1 line - Vulva - Birdwatching> - Vulva - Birdwatching
Good, but a bit bland. Not as nice as their first Rephlex album. I have a feeling this was one of those records that was stuck in the pipe quite a long time.
quoted 1 line - X-asp (with a Mike P track)> - X-asp (with a Mike P track)
This sort of alternates between experimental stuff and more standard techno but it's all above par. One or two tracks on this are just fucking amazing. And, as everyone knows, Mike's remix is the shit. rip off album of every important OLD SKOOL album that was made. It's all borrowed ideas and sounds. Artist that come to mind are Grandmaster flash, Lisa Lisa and Kult Jam (for god sake!!) who I am not saying is electro.... Twilight 22, Cybotron,Newcleus and on and on... New School....DMX KREW ain't. Try something on ELECTRON INDUSTRIES if you're looking for new electro soundz. But then again... electro is pretty limited in what defines it in the first place. I don't even want to try to give a definition. Someone else stake a stab at that one. Ben Synaptic Records (Rick and Ben) 608 S. Well Electro is like Disco in that time is as an important factor in defining the music as the actual sounds themselves. When I mean new school I just mean that they've made it recently, not that they're in the same camp as some of the oh so serious electro revivalsits about who are trying to expand the sound and revive it with fresh ideas. Who would have thought over 10 years later people would take music for breakdancing so seriously? -gonzi.
