All the sudden a band has a dance feel to the their tunes and now we need to consider them IDM??? If that be the case, shit we might as well talk about Madonna. Most of her songs are dancey, if they are intelligent in anyway is another story. can we end this, and all other potential threads about POP bands that have nothing to do with this list? ***********************U2 is not IDM************************************ U2's album is called POP, hello, that's exactly what U2 is and what their music is, POP music. This is sooooooo evident I can't understand how/why U2 is even mentioned at all on this list. If this was a German Language list, would we want someone to start posting in Swahili (sic?)? No.U2 have absolutely nothing to contribute to the discussion on this list. Shit the music on DROP BASS is more relevant to this list and we don't talk about it. We may not have a strict definition for IDM is, but there is one thing we all know IDM is not: rock! ***********************U2 is ROCK N ROLL!*****************************

This kind of thing pisses me off big time about a lot of people I know. All of a sudden grungoid rawknroll is no longer quite as trendy as it was, the masses are on a dance tip, E is the shit (*hahaha*), and wanker pop star muso's are cashing in on it. Friends of mine believe the wanker poppy music coming out is the new edge. Bollocks! I mean cases like U2, Tori Amos (Professional Widow - makes me wanna puke!! & I don't care who remixed/produced the dancey version). The problem is when POP wankers & the MAN hijack kif producers they tend to lose their street appeal. I mean can I trust HowieB again after doing work on POP. Likewise what about Eno????? But now the other problem is. How far do we go... U2 is one thing, but what about bands like Underworld. I still have a bit of a hard time liking them because they will always be a POP band (does anyone remember "Underneath the Radar") in my eyes, it smelt to me the first time I heard dubnobasswithmyheadman that Underworld had hijacked a genre started by people like Orbital and made a POP album out of it. Even the Shamen made POP music in the 80's.

you sir, are a fool. howie b sucked long before he went into the studio with U2. conversely, eno is still awesome, and his work with U2 was pretty damn good. i have no particular love for orbital, but how many people on this list decided to boycott them after they remixed madonna? not too many i bet, given by the amount of mindless drooling appreciation that "in sides" (a huge steaming turd of an album) got. meat beat manifesto have remixed some pretty dodgy people (the shamen?) but they always manage to turn crap into gold. to sum it up, in the words of rakim "it ain't where you're from, it's where you're at!"

so what? it was a damned fine album. they took the best of both worlds (dance & pop) and created a very heady brew.

and most of it was much better than their largely pathetic dance stuff. i would listen to "in gorbachev we trust" again. i will not listen to "boss drum" again.

i think our motto should be "it ain't where you're from, it's where you're at." on now: tranquility bass - let the freak flag fly (rock, salsa, samples, folk music, drum loops, guitar, synths, god knows what else... a strange psychedelic stew of influences.) But you must remember, there's a monied majority out there, all of whom have these issues, rendering them incapable of digestion-appreciation-CONSUMATION of music for music's sake. In a Calvinist, anti-esoteric posture thesxe poor souls cannot be luresd away from that which has stated meaning, or at least direct vocal association to another not myself. Everybody likes money, I suppose you'd have a point if you said bagging groceries has a more positive effect upon an artist's output than producing rock albums---methinks milkman is a product of the former, or at least one of those "trippy" visits to the supermarket.

Underworld admits they were unhappy with themselves in their first incarnation, but then they hooked up with a DJ...oooh...now we get pop star self indulgence over mediocre white-boy trance. n a w h' m a' c u p p u' t a e

As a white person I'm fed up with this continual association with the harsher, more electronic styles of dance and caucasions....i mean what the hells going on? white-boy-trance, white-boy-techno, i'm really fed up with it, Juan Atkins (practically inventor of techno as *we* know) wasn't white. Alex Reece, excellent drum and bass producer is white....i'm fed up with the attitude that some people have that whites can't actually make music. duh? -- Ben Coffer Hybrid Productions http://www.hybridgame.demon.co.uk/
