Mindy [and everyone else who is reading this] [I've sent it to the "intelligent dance music" list, btw], Just tonight I was sitting in my room and wondering if it really would be possible to boycott something as sick and commercial as MTV. Just think of all those hours of mindless programming: "The 'real' World", "Singled Out", "Buzzkill"... and that other show where people call up and ask questions about sex and stuff (on the air!) I forget the name of it but I am sure you get what I mean by now. MTV has gone too far with its mindless shite programming and from what I gather on the various mailing lists that I subscribe to -- I am not the only one who feels this way. Emptyvee used to be a pioneer. I remember back in the day watching Thriller and seeing those little clips of the rocket blasting off with the MTV logo. Anyone remember these days? When MTV was about MUSIC and not hype and this mindless shit programming? I dunno... I guess what I am looking for is a consensus. Maybe start some kind of boycott .... anyone else share my views? -peter

See, I can't form an opinion on this because I don't watch TV. In the '80's I was a trainspotting music video fanatic, watching up to 8 hours a day of Muchmusic [Canada's far superior MTV]. Then about 4 years ago I realized it was time to start doing something productive with my life and completely stopped watching television altogether. Since then I've felt m u c h b e t t e r. I've never seen the Real World, Buzzkill, etc and therefore useless tidbits of info like the theme song melody and the hosts' names aren't cluttering up my head. I recently heard some study results stating that in the last 10 years the average person has gained 15-20 extra hours of free time per week. This corresponds to the *increase* in the weekly amount of television watched per person. Says something about our culture. I guess my point is, if you think MTV sucks, then TURN IT OFF. Permanently. Don't tolerate mediocre programming. Cid. ____________________________________ Cindy Desmarais ---- http://weber.u.washington.edu/~cid ---- cid@u.washington.edu ____________________________________

dance labels are falling over themselves in a rush to get videos ready now that MTV is welcoming them. i've had a few labels already bug me about getting a video done... Almost every band has videos. It's a requirement these days. Labels will often spend more $ on the video than on the album. There are plently of uses for videos besides MTV, not least of which is MTV in other countries besides america. -CF

this is crazy! i just got the new entertainment weekly and there's an article called Rock is Dead. all about you guessed it, techno. it said AMP won't play Prodigy's Firestarter because it's too popppy or something. BUT they did play it on AMP I think. one of the early episodes.

haha...that's pretty funny...amp won't play prodigy cuz they're too poppy, but amp plays u2. hmmm...makes one wonder who's making the decisions up there in the nice cushy chair. another hair-raiser...u2 shouldn't even be classified as starting a new electronic movement considering their cd, "pop" is barely electronic. sure it's more so than their previous efforts, but not in comparison to other bands that have been doing their thing for years. i want to shoot the rolling stone journalists who proclaim such nonsense. peace... prymal ======== Prymal primal@interaccess.com http://www.interaccess.com/primal/ ======== A NEW JANUARY - CD debut, "Patchwork Shadows" electronic dance with a driving edge http://www.interaccess.com/primal/january/ ======== add some spice to your christ...necco wafers!

In July 1998, MTV (USA) will lauch a seven new cable channels, one of which will be called "MTV Indie". MTV Indie will feature rap, techno, and other genres from independent record labels. Will this be the formal death of Amp? Paul Rafanello paulr@ucs.net
