thats cool, but i wonder? will it work with old indie records?

Anyone know a relatively safe way of flattening a slightly warped record? I got a brand spankin' new Panacea 12" last week and while it plays relatively fine, watching the needle bounce up and down (ever so slightly) bugs the hell out of me. If the record plays OK, leave it alone. If a record is seriously warped, the only thing I know of that will help (and do additional damage in the process) is to put the vinyl in between two large pieces of glass in a barely-warm oven, then don't even think about touching it until the whole thing has cooled back down to room temperature. Bad idea!!! This is what my friend did. ...one of my airliquide records was badly warped due to the sun's rays falling on it so he put it in a crate of v. tightly packed 'house choons' right in the middle of them for a few days and that sorted it out. I wouldn't suggest the glass in am oven thing.... Sounds scary! What I do is put a heavy item on top of the record and place it on top of my amp... its only 100 watts (if it were any more I'd get evicted - CERWIN VEGAS kill neighbors:) The slight heat produced by the amp is too low to damage the tracks but enough to flatten the rekkid - oh! almost forgot - keep it in the sleeve! ok ok...better late than never, right? How to remove scratches from rekkids (i claim no responsibility for damage incurred) needed equiptment: lighter needle (sewing) pliers take needle and grasp w/ pliers - heat needle w/ lighter - gently remove scratch by pressing it gently w hot needle - this needs to be done in as anal retentive a manner as you can possibly muster do this only if all other options are exhausted... I prcticed this before ever attempting it on promos i got from sony america - i wish they would stop sending me stuff... umm - This method became neccissary for me to remove a scratch from my original pressing of temple of transparent balls - LOVE THAT ALBUM - sounds like new now!! The oven should be set as low as it can be, with the door half-open. And this is only to save a record you could otherwise never play! Weights are available that will help flatten a record temporarily. One weight for the center and a heavy loop for the outside. It's easy to find a regular piece of metal for the center. That will help a "dish warp", for one side anyway... Turntables are available with a vacuum pump that holds the vinyl firmly on the platter. Audiophile stuff... --Mark
