Let's talk about compilations: I don't buy them any more very often, since
I either want a 12" with the good bits, or a CD that's good all the way
through. Compilations seem doomed to be hit or miss. Either they
have tracks available elsewhere, or they include original tracks that
are pretty much outtakes. Why give a track to a compilation if it's good
enough to go on your own release?
Submerge, on the other hand, has performed an amazing public service with
their Depth Charge compilation series. Each one is a snapshot of more or
less recently released tracks from the Detroit techno universe.
These tracks are the real deal -- I've got some of them on vinyl, and
whoever compiled this generally took the top track off the 12". So
you get amazing pieces like Octave One's ENIAC, The Martian's "Ghost
Dancer," and Black Nation's "Homeboy."
At any rate it's "Depth Charge 4" (Various artists) Submerge Cat SCD4.
At all finer record emporiums worldwide or order it from the source
