hey everyone, anyone know if the remixes on the new Depeche Mode single(s)(ie pt I and II) are any good? supposedly it includes mixes by Hawtin, DJ Shadow, Underworld, and some others.... I haven't been able to get a hold of it yet. any opinions anyone? BRAT? thanks andy

I have the domestic release of this. Here is what I know. It is a little different than the 2 import releases. 1. Barrel of a Gun - single version ..if you like the mode you'll prolly like this. I know I did. Then again I have been a fan for years. 2. Painkiller <plastikman mix> I liked it. Little or no vocals. Not real familliar with plastikman, so don't know if this typical of his style. 3. Barrel of a gun <underworld soft mix> very nice. slowed down version. Brings out the best in the song. 4. Barrel of a gun <one inch punch mix..remix by: one inch punch <thats what the cd says> IMHO this is the best mix. Very rough, and the beats are fantastic. Even if your not a mode fan you'll prolly like this one. 5. Barrel of a gun <Underworld hard mix> IMHO starts of promising but soon becomes very repetitive and boring. well, theres 2 underworld remixes which are quite interesting. one slow downtempo "soft remix", which imo is the best of these two. classic underworld strings with some noice n some extracts from the original song. the other one, "hard mix", is a totally new song reminding me of the original "born slipy" or "tin there". quite trancy, quity monotonous and qute fun. plastikmans remix is also really cool. he's remixing an instrumental song, "painkiller", so thereby he hasn't got any prolems with the lyrics...:) however, kinds slow, kinda soft and good as well. of course he's taken away the fat drums and replaced them with y' know the usual 808ish drumsounds n soume noice. haven't found any mixes by dj shadow yet. sad but true. there's remixes by "one inch punch" and "united" as well, but they're not really good. i have the 12" coming on friday and from what i've heard there are some tracks only available on that one, so if there is a dj shadow remix it've gotta be on that 12"... sorry all for the bandwidth. cheers, franz. np: jega - jega. -- franz enmark --- extra terrestrial -- -- there's a sheep loose in the lane, -- -- there's a goose asleep in the rain -- -- http://tbm.scicom.se/plod/ --- od? --

I've yet to see imports, so these are the US releases: One Inch Punch remixes "Barrel of a Gun" and "Painkiller (Original Mix)". The remix of "Barrel of a Gun" sounded sloppy to me. I find it strange that One Inch Punch are credited for REmixing the "original mix". Underworld does a hard mix and soft mix (beatless). The beatless mix is a wothwhile alternate version of the song, with vocals. The hard mix is trademark Underworld but sloppy. Somehow the beats don't gel (or fall apart in an interesting way) and the parts don't fit together too well. No DJ Shadow mix that I know of. A 3 Phase remix is on the US cassette. It's probably on vinyl/CD on the UK releases. Hawtin remixes "Painkiller". Nice, throbbing sound but no big surprises. ya...hawtkins remix of painkiller is a killer pain in the ass... still not convinced... 05ik4.(HfiCDs).soon...
